We are an option football team and I am in a debate about having a simple offensive strategy or a complex strategy. what do you think are the advantages and disadvatages of each? can a team win on a consistent basis by having a game plan of 5-6 running plays and 3-4 passing plays? with option football I believe repetition is more important than having 1,000 different plays. is this true or false? let me know what you think!!!!

it is not the number of plays that make a system complex it is the system or packaging. You can be as complex as you want (if you look at our overall system we are as complex as it gets) if it is presented in logical, progressive manner that makes it seem simple to the kids. A great teach is not one who teaches simple addition - a great teacher is one who teaches complexed theories and make them seem as simple as addition.
If you have a good system with a sound teaching philosophy you will be surprised how much kids can learn - and if you challenge them - how much they can learn.
We do not adhere to the K.I.S.S. (Keep it simple stupid) philosophy - we adhere to the M.I.S.S. (Make it seem simple) philosophy.
If you would like to really study how much kids can learn and how - read some of Howard Gardener's books on cognitive theory. They are deep but worth the effort.
Coach I, I have always said that teachers that excell in the classroom make the best coaches. I totally agree with your post. Never sell the kids short. They can learn anything that you want to teach them. Some of the best techniques of teaching can be applied to coaching and some of the best coaching techniques can be applied to teaching. This is my 34th year of teaching and coaching and I still enjoy both greatly. A hint to all young coaches on this board - If you want to be successful and last a long time be as good in the classroom as you are on the field. IT IS COACHING IN BOTH AREAS!!!
