I was thinking of running this coverage next year with the players that I have returning. If you coaches would elaborate on how you run this coverage, some of your reads, and how effective this coverage is for you and your team.
Putting it in its simplest form you have a short defender and a deep defender. You can play Soft Cover 2 or Jam 2. I like Jam. My short defender trys to force the receiver to the inside and looks to the #2 receiver to do a short route. The deep defender stays over the top of both receivers.
A question I have for cover 2 guys is, is there a certain distance between the #2 and #1 receiver that you will not run this coverage. For example when the ball is on the Hash and the offense is using a tight slot formation my Deep defender may not be able to cover #1 on the vertical if #2 does an out or an arrow route.
Do you guys cheat towards the vertical threat with the deep defender? Get out of this coverage? or some other method of handling the situation.
We are not a big cover2 defense, but we will play a form of it. We play a soft cover2, which is really a form of in/out man. We like to play this coverage vs 2 detached WR's (twins) who are within 5 yards of each other. We do not play this coverage vs a TE/FL, a wide slot, or a tight slot. We will play a form of robber vs these formations.
Thanks for the reply coaches. Talk a little more about it out of the 3-3-5 stack. I would also like to know more about the Robber coverage if you can he
