This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
When reading keys in the 4-4 defense vs the Wing T, would it be better for the Inside Backers to key Guards or backfield? I know the G's will take you to the ball because of all the pulling action, but the backs can also tip off what the play is. Would love some opinions on this.
Always key the guards--unless you are playing a team with false pulls. However, I have not seen wing-T teams with false pulls, they are usually very basic. You are right, you can pretty much tell what play package they are running on the first step or two. But still key the guards. Otherwise, your play-side backer will be lulled into filling on the trap, and suddenly they give on a buck sweep and the inside lane is not filled as it should be. That is what the entire wing-T system is based on--lots of plays with the same/similar look. If you start to over-play one its counter will kill you.

There is nothing that will show a man's true character like the 2 yard line.
I have tried to read the guards in the past, but we are not a guard reading team. We would try to read the guards for one game of the year and we were not good at it.
Then we came up with an epiphany. Read the QB. Which way that he opens up, go opposite. So his butt basically points the way, which is what we tell the kids. We are a 4-4 team and been pretty successful. The only play that this doesn't work against, (The team that we play) is the counter, which the MLB's are listening for.
So check out what the teams run that you are playing and see if this would work for your situation.
Jwcoop has a good point. If you don't normally read the guards or coach your kids to read lineman at all, my previous post is null. We were always a team that read the guards--we ran up against a couple of wing-T teams each year, so it worked well for us. Watch the tape--it doesn't lie, and you will find tips for plays--it might be as subtle as the wing being half a step deeper, or you may catch a pulling guard with his butt down a bit, etc.
