Interesting discussion arose during a clinic today and it got me to thinking how many different ways guys align to 3x1 sets especially a closed 3x1 vs an open 3x1 also a 3x1 with single width opposite the 3 receiver side. Then the motion to 3x1 snuck in it opened up more discussion.
Looking to hear what you all have to say.
I try to keep it as simple as possible with my kids.
I really only have 1 true linebacker and that is the Mike who is in a 10 tech. The 40i inside backer goes to the passing strength except 2x2 and is pretty much DB type kid. So I have my corners play #1's my OLB's play #2 and my 40i backer play #3.
2x2 to 3x1 40i makes the adjustment to #3
2x1 to 3x1 40i makes the adjustment to #3
3x1 with a TE being the 1 man side has the OLB to that side in a 3x4 alignment and the corner over the top at 7yds. Corner plays TE and the OLB will play any #2 out. Motion from 3x1 to 2x2 corner will bump out with the motion if single width. No backers have to do anything.
Maybe this set of rules has holes but its real easy and I don't worry about the fact I have one of the ILB's out in space. The clinician today was terrified about moving his inside backers out of the box in a 3x1 set. So to keep both of them home he would have to run guys all over the place so he completely bagged cover 1 all together.
He was REAL adamant about it too and I ended up thinking about it all friggin' day. Being a HS teacher has made me get some serious OCD so I was doodling all day. I ended up going to the next clinic sessions and doodling all kinds of ways to do it and THEY ALL had exceptions to rules. I could not find anything easier than that other than if I did not move my 40i to play #3 either way and left was one ILB and right was the other ILB.
I know he must have gotten burned with a slow inside backer on #3 or they ran off tackle QB ISO or something like that to make him thinking that. i can completely understand him because the last thing I want to do is bring Mike out of the 10 tech because of his lack of speed trying to cover a back.
Just wondering how you guys make your 3x1 adjustments in Cover 1.
Thanks,
Jeff
