I am a recent graduate from college, and I am looking to become a football coach and my ultimate goal is to make a career out of coaching. I graduated with a degree in accounting, and have moved to Cedar Rapids, IA. I am interested in all levels of football, but have come to the realization that high football might be out of the picture. Currently I am working full time, and can't afford to volunteer coach for high school football. If there is any help information or tips you could give me to help me reach my goal, I would greatly appreciated it.
You've got a great goal, but realize, high school football (and much of college football) does not pay enough to be your one and only job. High school coaching addendums will range from a couple of thousand dollars to 5k+...there are a few here and there push 10k, but not many. Be patient and keep an eye out for a job that might give you the flexibility for coaching. Lastly, don't instantly assume that higher levels of coaching are out of your reach. Work your way up, and like everything, coaching often becomes who you know. Get your name out there, and good things may happen. Good luck.

There is nothing that will show a man's true character like the 2 yard line.
From my experience in Indiana, Middle schools are nearly always looking for coaches. Those positions are usually paid. High Schools at times need people too but those sometimes are not always paid position. Middle Schools pay only a little between 700 to 2000 depending on the school, but it's not year round at that level and really only a 3 month commitment.
First, most states require Coaches at schools, even volunteers, to be state certified. That is your first goal if you wish to coach at a school.
Second now that you have the itch, just like college, you'll have to earn your stripes more often than not. That means studying the game backwards and forwards. Beyond that it means taking a less than "glamorous" role as position coach. I don't mean to demean a position coach as for years thats what I did, and still do, as the need arises but most folks think HC, OC, and DC when they think coach. To my thinking the best thing you can do is learn the various blocking schemes as the offensive line is much maligned but more often under served as far as coaches or coaching goes. Special Teams is another area that can make or break a squad but doesn't get a lot of attention.
Third you'll have to find a "Real Job" if your not teaching at the school, that means having to find an employer who is willing to work with you on early dismissal from July to October. These days a lot of schools have 7 on 7 and camps in June/July and then Start 2 a days, in August.
Finally, never under estimate the value of Youth Football experience. It provides the opportunity to work a normal schedule, hone your skills as a coach and TEACHER, learn from mistakes without the huge spotlight, and see if you really have the passion to coach for a continued length of time. Above all Varsity programs want dedicated coaches for continuity sake, they really don't like to swap coaches year in and year out. There is more to coaching than X's and O's, you have to make a positive impact on kids. The things they learn via football Work hard, Self Discipline, and Team above personal gain, go much further than the Grid Iron.
Good Luck
Its not about how much YOU know about the game, its about how much you share that knowledge with the people around you.
I have recently authored a book for first year coaches. If you would like to get the material, let me know... I am more interested in helping people than making money off of it.. the book is set to be published soon. If the material helps you thanI would love to pass on what I have learned.
