I have been researching this for a while and I am thinking about having our kids do this on thursday after walk throughs and weight training. They say doing it for about 7-10 minutes helps squeeze the lactic acid out of your muscles like a sponge making your legs feel fresher for the game. Does anybody else do this and what do you think??
Our players started doing this last year and I really believe it made a huge difference, but it may just be that anything feels better after going through an ice bath. But hey i'm not a trainer.
Lactic acid is there because of exertion when there is not enough oxygen and glucose readily available for aerobic respiration. It is produced under anaerobic conditions to give cells another source of energy. It is not known for sure if it is the cause of pain or not after the exertion, or if it is just during the workout. Ice is there to minimize inflammation and swelling--it does not do anything for lactate buildup. Ice is always a safe thing when someone has the potential for developing any sort of inflammation. If it works use it, but don't buy in to that "pulling lactic acid out like a sponge" bs. Ice is for inflammation only as is ibuprophen.
