Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
when in man coverage i have an automatic blitz off the edge for my dog/spur if the #2 threat is in the backfield. For example... Against a Pro I formation my Dog/Spur on the weakside would automatically be coming hard off the edge on a Contain Blitz!! I teach him to aim for the deepest Back. Im wondering what you guys think?
If you do it all the time you are giving up a tendency for them to throw the slant.
My advice is to "sugar" it. Sometime he goes, sometimes he doesn't. Have him look at the QB. HS Qb will always "tell" him when he throws it, he'll look there before he gets under center. When he give a quick look to the slant, tell him to just drop into it.
Guarantee it!!!
Did you find when opponents got some tape on you, they started to try to hit the slant?
We play Robber to all 2 back sets We play Cover 1 to all 1 back sets
We DO NOT auto blitz in zone because of the backside slant. We do run a bunch of Cover 1 Green which is essentially what you are doing. The open backer/Spur will blitz.
If they run a ton of 1-back and you are like me and play a ton of Cover 1, sugar the Spur and he will grab a pick, probably for 6 if he just learns to read the pre-snap read of the HS QB. Have your backer coach watch film with the Spurs.
I always watch film with my FS. He makes the calls and we are always watching the QB and looking for his tells. From breaking the huddle, to who he is talking to as he walks to the LOS, to his presnap read, his height under the center, etc... In 15 years of HS coaching, EVERY HS QB has major tells. Just like EVERY OC I have ever played against.
I think an auto blitz is dangerous. Good OC's will see it and will take advantage of it as coach spoke of. However, if you have true shut-down corners, you might be able to get away with it.

There is nothing that will show a man's true character like the 2 yard line.
I think that it's an effective move...If a team is going to throw the slant, the receiver will have a WIDE split, and this will allow your corner to TAKE it away by adjusting inside....Be sure to tell your 9 tech that if the back goes away, to look for something coming back towards him.....:cool;

For us, when the spandit has no vertical threat by a #2 receiver, he has a "check w/ me." Thumbs up=blitz. thumbs down=spin, thumbs in=cover 2 safety alignment, tight fist=hold at 5x5 and take away underneath route

It is dangerous, but you can do what you are talking about, if you are able to take one of your zone players and buzz immediately to the back side slant that everyone on here keeps telling you that you need to worry about.
I think the points on here are valid, but that doesnt mean you can't do what you want. If you are reasonably certain that you can get there within 2 seconds and force the hot throw, then make sure you are COVERING the hot throw, then you may pick one off.
But I do agree with the board, autoblitzing in general CAN lead to some issues, because part of the success of a blitz is the element of surprise. But, defensively I like to dictate what I want the other team to do. So, if I think that I can win the game by forcing a team to throw all underneath stuff that I can aggresively over play (but remember, you have to make sure you can get there in under 2 seconds) then autoblitz all day.
Granted, I do NOT autoblitz as I said above, but dont let "well they can throw this on you" dissuade you from giving it a whack, especially if you are taking your opponent outside of their comfort zone by having them attempt a play that MAY not be a big part of their offense. Every blitz, front, stunt, etc, that you may have will have one or two offensive plays that can hurt it.
There are teams you can blitz, and teams you can't. The trick is knowing protections and seeing if you can attack them. Plus, time your kids on film to see how long it takes them to get there. I actually do this with a stop watch while watching film.

I am in favor of the automatic blitz; however dont do it every time. Showing blitz and getting back in coverage is effective. Or blitz and occasionally have your DE (if athletic enough) drop into that vacated zone. I think man coverage with various zone concepts underneath can be quite effective.
