Hello all, I have recently been put incharge of the specials teams for a womens football team from PA. They are a brand new team and only a handfull of them have ever played before this season. I am looking for some advice on coaching SP teams, any formations that could be effective, and any drills that I can use during practice. My fellow coaches have decided to give me all of the backup players from O and D and to have them be dedicated to special teams so that the starters can have breaks during game time. So I am going to need to have a full practice worth of drills and plays for them to go over. Any input or plays and formations that anyone could send me will be greatly appreciated. Thanks again
Coachcody your can write most colleges and they will be very happy to help you. You can also get George Allens book on special teams and also the American Football Coaches Associations book on special teams. All the information is great, Florida State is really good about sending out information.
keep things fairly basic. Don't get too fancy until you are comfortable. As far as drills, are you going to have any help at all or are you going to be on your own with 30 players? If you are going to have some help, run circuits--break the field into 4 areas focusing on one different skill/aspect of a particular special teams play (punt, kick return, etc). Basically run like an offensive individual time where you are working your EDD's. The simplest KO return is the wedge--works very well; simplest punt return is probably done by manning up on the kicking team and blocking/influencing coverage to one side of the field or another. FG/XP--can't go wrong with the double tight, double wing look. Everyone is toe to heel, on the snap, step and punch to your inside gap and don't turn your shoulders. Kickoff and Punt coverage...I give my players 3 rules--Keep spacing, be aware, and be fearless...Keep spacing--if you are running down the field on a coverage and are following a teammate, move over! Find the open lane. Be aware--recognize what is happening in front of you, see flow of the other team, and keep your head on a swivel or your are probably going to get it knocked off! Be fearless--you have to run down field and want to get to the ball at all cost! It takes a special mentality to be a good special teams player...they are not always your best athletes, but they can't be your worst!
