I am applying for a job where I attended high school, this would be my second coaching job, as I coached a 9 man team in North Dakota while attending college. I am 27, and LOVE TO LEARN and TEACH! I am not a teacher, but already landed a surgical scrub tech job in the town, and they are working around my football schedule (done at 3 M-TH). That is a little rundown of what I have, the AD is said to be a straight shooter, who loves discipline, the program is in need of change, attitude wise, great atheletes year and year out, but they don't mount up to much (offseason program is junk).
I have a philosophy page done up, but any help you could send would be great! Ideas are always the building block for other great ideas! t_rodvelt@hotmail.com would be my email! Thanks again for all the help, and a few of you may remember me when I chatted on here before I got my last job in North Dakota (Tri-County Raiders).
You might want to think about what you would implement for an offseason program and how you would change it. Another question I got was how you would communicate with parents and players. How to handle off field issues and discipline issues, also dealing with parents who odn't think their kid is getting enough PT
Thanks Coach for your packet;) Already had that though, but thanks again!!!
Yeah, I have offseason program and such, but fundraising will really be a no no in a sense. A few years back the school went to a standard of not allowing individual teams to fundraise themselves, really really poor decision, but now you must run a fundraiser as a atheltic department. Which is fine, I still have ideas, and any money is better than non, along with getting the football team into the community to help out.
What type of programs do you guys run in the offseason? I know weight room, passing leagues, but these kids are SOOO unmovitated to get into the weight room and actually work. That will be my toughest task I believe.
Give out t-shirts to kids that reach certain goals etc. Maybe offer pizza parties etc. for attendance. Only give out shirts ot the kids that commit and show up all the time.
Unfortunately that's not an overnight fix. When a bad attitude creeps in, it is painful to get out. I've been on a staff that went through it. You have to tear off the bandage quickly, and hope the pain only lasts a short while. It will wear you out mentally and physically, but once you find those kids who will buy in it becomes much easier. The key is finding those kids. If you have a strong administration who will support you, that makes things easier, too. Lay out your expectations, and let kids know that if they live up to those expectations, they will be the players that are most relied upon...and then stick to that! If it is a big mess, you have to go in with an "It's my way or the highway" mentality for a year. Whatever you do, do not waver from what you line out as your plan. Even if things get tough, do not change mid-season. Changes can be made for the next year, but mid-season changes give the impression that you didn't know what you were doing when you started leading down this path. My opinion, but from my experience, this is what I have seen as true. I worked as an assistant under a coach who took over an underachieving program with large amounts of baggage. We were a big school, so we didn't have to worry about numbers, and he laid down very clear expectations and new direction. There were several people (athletes, coaches, and boosters) who were comfortable under the old "ways" that got rubbed wrong and left the program. We got our rears handed to us that year, winning 1 game. The next year we took those kids who got their lumps, got them into the weightroom, designed a offseason program that emphasized general athleticism, and took those kids to a conference championship the next year. It can be done, but you have to be strong in your convictions of what you are doing and where you are going.

There is nothing that will show a man's true character like the 2 yard line.

Well I think it went really well, had the interview in front of a panel of 5 members, I was honest, up front, and really preached discipline and the offseason program. I went to high school in Glasgow, and the off-season program is really what seperates Glasgow from the other schools, they have great athletes, as shown by the numerous state championship in wrestling, cross country, golf, track and such, all individual type events, they have never really bought into the TEAM concept. X's and O's will be the least of my worries, it will be about getting them to really believe it's about the TEAM! I will know by the latest..friday afternoon about both the two jobs I applied for! So if I get it, I will surley be on here QUITE a bit. I would also be wondering if anyone has some nice free videos/dvds on spread offenses, and I am still looking into what defense I would run, I love the 3-3-5:) Blitz like crazy to stop the run and pass, but not sure yet! I love pressure!
