Anything you could send me would be great! I want to run a 5-3 defense, but have the flexibility to use it as a 4-3, if that makes any sense at all:) T_rodvelt@hotmail.com is my email!
I would be careful in trying to accomplish this. Not saying that it cant be done with some simple personnell shifting, but fundamentally and 8 man front defense with 5 committed line man has severe differences then a 7 man front
If you only want to use the 4-3 for one back sets, that is understandable as you can scheme that and package your personnell based on what the offense is sending in.
If you were to run more of a 3-5, I think you can get into a 4-3 easier then you could from a 5-3. I guess it depends on what you plan on doing with those two outside guys in our 5-3.
I would love to discuss further if you want to elaborate some.

We used to be able to shift into a 5-3 look out of a 44 with pretty good results. I would agree with Coach D, however, that basing out of a 53 and stemming to a 43 might be difficult--unless you are able to simply replace your nose with a safety-type kid. Without changing personnel I think you might be putting your kids at an athletic disadvantage. The other option is to look into a 34 defensive scheme. It is a bit more complicated, but it is only one system you have to teach rather than two.

There is nothing that will show a man's true character like the 2 yard line.
See, I agree as well, I am a huge fan of the 4-3/4-4 (depending on SS and team facing and gameplan) But with the new coach coming in and he see's us running a 5-3 with the kids we have, so I want to gather as much information as I can about it to see what I can do with it, if that at all make sense. I am willing to take any info on the 4-6, 3-4, 4-4, 5-2, 5-3, even the 3-3-5
That would allow you to base out of a 5-3 as your HC would like to do and still be sound vs 2 and 1 back sets. You will need something for empty sets (and there is a better answer for 3 back sets) but you are at least sound against most of what you see week in and week out.

Yeah, thats what my plan was, but I see a few things you do differently that makes alot of sense. UP here (Montana) most of the teams run WING, or some sort of WING, so the no back, even shotgun is scarce up here. So I really like the 5 man front, or even the 3 series of defenses (same concept) to stop the run.
i think as long as you have 8 in the box against the run, you'll be ok. Ask any wing guy adn they will tell you a good way to disrupt the Wing T is to cover the guards (2 3 tech, which it looks like you have).
Good stuff

In any 4-4 (or 4-2-5) to get to a 5-3 qall you have to do is have both DT's in a 3 tech., & stack the ILBers on the Center. No one else need move. Very effective!
The way to disrupt a Wing -T team is to get penetration. A 50 front confounds the guard pulls but they trap a lot as well. However, most of the QB movement is directly behind the LOS. Get your DL to the heels of the OL and you disrupt the ability of the QB to come down the LOS for the multiples. The aiming point for the Wing is the heels of the FB thats roughly 3 yards deep. So the initial fake to the FB is an open Midline, from there he goes down the LOS to the second back or hands off to the Wing and bootlegs out. A good Wing team is extremely hard to stop regardless of the defense. You cant key backs because they go to different holes, you cant key the guards because they might be trapping. If they fake well (the key to the Wing) it is very hard to determine who has the rock.
Ergo, like the Wishbone your defense has to be disciplined in order to get under their skin.
A Standard set up for the 50 is 9-3-0-3-9 Ive taken A,B, and D gap. Mike has weak A, Will and Sam have C. Corners are maned up with the FS playing Center field depending on the formation. I can maneuver to a 9-4-0-4-9 and stack Will and Sam behind the tackles and swap Band C gap responsibility back and forth. The Key to playing a 50 front these days is teaching your DE to "SQUEEZE" C gap while keeping his outside shoulder and leg free to take on the bounce to D Gap and string that out along the LOS. No more boxing DE no more crossing the LOS unless he has a play. If you can turn your DE into a Gap and a half or true 2 Gap player, your making it extremely hard to run inside. I definitely want penetration from my Tackles and Nose. My LB's should be reading their assigned gap then flowing to the ball carrier.

See, I would much rather run a 3-4, gives me more flexibility, but the head coach really likes the 50 series (which is much like the 30 series) I am going to convince him the 5-2 with an aggressive safety would be the way to go. We only have one team we will face all year running the spread (And they are very poor at it).
I would agree with you that having a SS who can play it like a LB is a good idea. Keep in mind he will have to play as a Safety so he better have decent cover skills to stay in a 50 defense against a passing team. However, I dont necessarily agree that switching from an Odd to an Even front is quite seamless. Switching from a Even to an Even or an Odd to an Odd is. I regularly switch from a 60 to a 40 front with relative ease. While I never used a 30 front the concept is so close to a 50 that your not changing a thing front wise for the core group (TNT). In fact, I would suggest that you could replace you DE's in obvious passing situations with extra LB's or DB's. Can you do as Coach Mountjoy suggests (Odd to Even-Even to Odd)? Absolutely!! Just like anything else, the key to any of this is to make time for it in practice. If you don't practice this your asking for confusion from the players it effects when you put it in.
