Ok guys... Our crosstown rivals run the spread option. Any suggestions? Im thinking about dropping a DOG/SPUR and going with a 34 look with 4 0 4 techs up front. Maybe play some cover 2. And throwing some corner blitzes in there. What do you guys do? Can we just stay in our 35 Base?
I think that the 35 is tailor-made for the spread option. Stay in your base for the most part, and cross read your stacks. Can play some cover-two with spur blitzing once in a while. Unless you're outmanned, I would not do a ton of blitzing from the stack unless it is a "sure" passing down if they run the spread option very well. Keep the Tackles from downblocking and setting the edge, and turn your nose and mike loose!

There is nothing that will show a man's true character like the 2 yard line.
If you like to take risks that may or may not be that risky depending on how well they throw walk the Safeties up to about 8 yards.
Two reasons. A) now the QB is looking at another defender on the edge of the box. B) It almost forces the Offense to do something with the SE or TE or Slot to account for the extra defender closer to the LOS.
A normal option read is the LMOLOS or the OSLB. I dont know that a Corner Blitz will be all that, it really depends on how well the QB can throw. Here's what I would do from an offensive standpoint against the blitz. A if the Safety doesn't go with the Slot, I have to throw it to make you respect the pass. If I see the Corner coming down inside I know I have a wide open receiver for a Hitch n Go with only one defender to stop him.
JR is correct with the Idea of bringing the 3-5 an inside backer and having your DT's be mindful of the Crack or Down Block form wither the TE or Slot. Here is where I would probably play the 5 tech because I really want them going inside to my strength. If I stack my ISLB over the 5 and play the OSLB Wide say 3 x3, I can play games with the Stack in both B and C. If I walk the safeties up I have 5 folkes on the edge and only 3 blockers. Yeah I am showing a weak belly but I'd rather funnel the play inside than give them numbers on the edge.
But that assumes they run the Outside speed option rather than a Midline or what I call a Give no give Option.
Its not about how much YOU know about the game, its about how much you share that knowledge with the people around you.
