Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I am coaching defense at a school that hasn't won a lot the past few years, one game in 4 years. Our first game is against a team that uses the single wing without a quarterback, two backs in proset direct snap, with a unbalanced line.
WHAT WOULD BE YOUR IDEAS ON PLAYING THIS?? I HAVE WATCHED A LOT OF GAME TAPE FROM LAST YEAR ON THEM, RUN 78% STRONG RIGHT AND EITHER A WEDGE OR A OFF TACKLE PLAY. ANY INSIGHT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!! i WOULD LIKE TO BE READY TO GIVE THESE KIDS A WIN TO GET THEM OUT OF THE LOOSING HABIT!!
Did the film show you any keys for the play? Who had the ball most BB or another back? Was it all Power and Wedge or did they Spin? Do they Pull?
The thing about the SW, DW, And Option offenses is that they force the defense to be situational. In other words each man has to play his position well. The ability to Penetrate the line, Shed blocks, and make sure tackles are your best defense against this. My guess is that The Wedge will be the play they use to attempt to establish dominance on the LOS. The only effective defense against it is to get in the gaps and penetrate quickly. Similarly playing gaps can be effective against the unbalanced line. Against the Wedge (or any combination block) if the DL feels itself giving ground (going backwards) they MUST make a pile (Get on the ground).
Since I like to put a bit of pressure on the backfield, I would line up a SS, LB or CB about 2 yards outside the weak side TE and use him to chase the rabbit (BB). He has to be fast enough to make a difference. Why? Now the OC has to consider using a G or B to keep this guy from running plays down from behind. Thats one less blocker for the off tackle. You can mix that up a bit sending him on some but not all plays.
If you do so, this kid has to be a greyhound with good tackling skills. His aiming point is the near hip of the BB. Change sides as they do.
just thinking outside the box
Its not about how much YOU know about the game, its about how much you share that knowledge with the people around you.
5-3 SLIDES a man over vs unbalanced. NOTE: Mike & BS/LBer CAN slide over behind the DT's also, & Strong OLBer CAN be "up" on outs. shoulder of WB.
DE on TE (wing sided) MUST be PHYSICAL!
Get good F/S RUN SUPPORT if TE & WB block. He is only 8 yds deep on inside shoulder of TE.
GENERALLY - best run key for LBers = BB (just behind longside OG
I might ADD the DE & OLB on WING side can mix up who has C gap & who has D gap. They can get quick run support (in M/M) if the WB blocks (from Corner), or if TE blocks (from F/S).
They run a direct snap to the fullback or tailback lined up in proset. I did see that the Blocking Back goes everywhere the ball is going. I want the LB keying on the guards and the BB. They don't run any spin action, thankfully, they do pull guards and tackles a lot on the off tackle plays. I was wondering about blitzes, when and where would you? I want to put pressure on their offense but I dont want the LB's going in to fast not knowing where they ball is. They do run one play that we have to watch for a reverse trap with the wing back. I appreciate all comments very much, I hope that I can only help someone with something sometime.
With the C on the LOS you can Bring pressure from the Weak side. I like Coach Mountjoy's suggestion with the DE and OSLB on Strong Side. In fact I would take it a step further and Stack them on both sides so the O doesnt really know until the ball is snapped who is taking C gap. An old standby with the 5-3 against Wing T teams is to slant the line to strength. Since your DTs are Gapped in Coach M's diagram, you can slant Nose and two DE's with the LB's taking over the opposite gap.
If you determine not to use the CB on the LOS weak side as a Blitzer I would not Blitz as I truly think you need folks to play their positions. However, another alternative is...
With Coach M's suggetstion and from a stacked formation. The whole purpose of the C is to force the offense to stay inside the END. The C is wide enough to be a problem for the Wing and puts him in conflict as to who to block. With closing speed, the C, is forcing the O to take one of their perimeter blockers away from the play to take on the C. I can still slant or stunt with the LB's and I have taken one of their blockers away from the POA. Same theory applies the C has to be a greyhound with good tackling skills. The bad thing here is that I am a bit more exposed against weak side run.
