Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
We run a 4-3 and are looking to utilize cover 2 more this year. Does anyone have any keys or reads they can pass along for the CBs, Safeties, and LBs? Thanks in advance.
Cover 2 indicates that your twins are splitting the field deep, this is a pretty standard set up. The real question is what are you doing with the underneath coverage?
Cover 2-- Man under? Cover 2---1/4's under? 1/5th's, 1/3's? A lot of that is determined by what your going to expect from you CB's and LB's against the running game and how you bring pressure.
Why are you running Cover 2? Do you face a ton of spread teams? Are your expecting more passing from a Pro Set? Or are you merely trying to CYA by having 2 Center fielders?
Typically if you play a zone under your LB(s) and CB's will typically stop dropping when the QB does, your Safeties are expected to keep the receivers with or under them. So they usually stop dropping when the ball is in the air. Remember your not playing a man your playing an area or the ball. One of the biggest advantages is that your defense gets to face the backfield and make plays against both pass and run. In Man coverage situations your playing pass only and support the run as best as possible.
Without knowing what you want to do and for what reasons its kinda hard to offer more than generalities.
Its not about how much YOU know about the game, its about how much you share that knowledge with the people around you.
We will be running a mix of cover 2 1/5's under and cover 2 man under. We will mix in a little cover 2 1/4's under. We have be working mostly cover 2 1/5's under all summer. We have a mix of spread teams and run teams. We are hopefully going to be able to cheat our safeties up vs. the run teams and let our corners cover the wr. We have some good rules that we have been teaching so far. Just looking to see how others are teaching it. We have actually gone about it by teaching a match up zone. We are jumping the man in our zone and reading to another receiver. The problems we are trying to take care of now is vs. 4 verticals. Who do we want helping out the safeties? Also, when a safety gets a post from the #1 wr and the #2 receiver runs a wheel. Assuming the backside safety cannot help out against the post.
This is far too much to discuss typing (how to play those coverages properly, AND, make all the necessary adjustments), but if you phone me at 804-378-0116 (no later than 9 PM Eastern time) I would be glad to help you.
CBs read #2, if #2 goes vertical, need to lock on #1 if he does too.
All underneath zone defenders MUST CARRY THE SECOND RECEIVER THROUGH THE ZONE. e.g. #1 on the post is the first through CB's flat zone. The wheel is 2nd into CB's flat zone so CB must carry him deep (or deck him).
It is not even that complicated. CB must understand that he can leave ONE deep man for his safety but never TWO. Anytime there are two deep threats to his side, CB must become a deep defender.

COACHE - you asked about BOTH Cover 2/Zone Under, & Cover 2/Man Under. In addition to base alignment, reads, techniques, etc. - ADJUSTING to all the formations, such a 3x1 & 2x2 (not to mention shifts & motions) you see today must be understood. "Mis-Align" & you "pay the price!
We draw it up vs. just about EVERYTHING, & try to keep the adjustments consistant! IE: Pro to Slot & vice-versa.
Corners: Jam and funnel #1 receiver/ flat coverage / Pitch in option.
Safeties: Half field zone / QB to Pitch in option
Backers: OLB's = Seam / QB to Pitch in option, Mike = Hole / Dive to QB in Option
Reads:
Corners: The football height with the QB: High ball = 3-step drop, low ball = 5 step drop
Keep funneling the #1 until #2 shows (rec or back) and then play him M/M.
Safeties: High hat/low hat of linemen, QB ball height, Qb eyes (not many HS qb's read deep progressions.
Backers: High hat/low hat, play run first pass second.
Anyway thats what we do for the most part. Every opponent does things different so the "rules" may alter as we need them to.
We run a variety of coverages out of a Cover 2 shell. If you are interested in talking about them, shoot me an e-mail. They are easy to teach and give different looks or change things up with option responsibilities, etc...
Thanks for the help. The ideas posted were the same that we have been talking about. We are teaching our corner to jam #1 inside and immediately eye the #2 WR. The CB will then run with any wheel. If #2 is getting vertical, the CB will continue to get depth. The OLB is looking to move to the hook zone and then the curl. He is reading #2 WR. If the #2 WR is running vertical, he will jam him and continue to run with him vertical or on a post. If the #2 WR goes flat, he is eyeing the #1 WR and running to the curl zone. With cover 2, we are primarily concerned with the 4 verticals and post-wheel combo. Thanks for all of your help.
What you REALLY need to know is how to adjust those coverages to EVERYTHING you will see. Teaching the BASE is easy - adjustments are much more complicated (& NECESSARY)!
I can assure you (after 40+ years of coaching) that "WHO" (assignments) is more important than "HOW" - (techniques) - in other words - mediocre coverage on the RIGHT zone or man, is more important than great coverage on the WRONG zone or man. Football is a GAME of mistakes, & it is easy to "blow assignments" vs. the VARIED personnel groupings, formations, & shifts in today's game.
If you look at any NFL or major College notebook, and MOST High School notebooks - you will see the coverage shown as adjusted to about 25 combinations of formations, shifts, etc. All of our coverages are written up that way.
Work that out (simple & consistent adjustment rules) & you will be on your way!
Best Wishes!
PS: Just for starters - go onto this site & work out how YOU will adjust to the formations shown.
I agree with teachign how to adjust to formations. We are going to begin our first week of camp by teaching the cover 2 concept and zones the first day and then get into the various formations that we will see and teach how we will adjust to them. Do you have anything that has different formations already drawn up?
Bill, I have been coaching youth football for many years but just moved up the ranks a little. i understand the set up of the cover 2 but am looking for some help on adjustments to different formations. i have looked everywhere online and done a lot of research. what can i do to take a look at those 6 pages you have? anything would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
