Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Coaches,
Facing a team that is a Wing T with some spread mixed in. They also run the spinner series from the gun. If you break them down they run about % 50 wing t and % 25 each on spread/spinner. Question is what are keys/reads vs spinner and what have any of you done vs spinner to be successful out of the 40 fronts.
Assignment, discipline football, read the line and keys, don't get caught up watching the backfield and QB.
Its designed to confuse and frustrate you and your kids, just as the Wing T does. Misdirection in the backfield so treat it like Wing T.
From zero expereince playing against it but a bunch of reading, Spinners likes unbalanced, and spinners likes going no-huddle to keep you (coach) from making the calls but its basically WT philosophy of misdirection.
Bottom line is you have to teach them to play their assignments, gaps, etc..., read the LOS, recognize the unblalanced and to make the bumps to unbalanced, flopping TE, etc... so you don't get hammered by it.
My two cents without really knowing how complete your opponent's "Spinner" series is.
Is it a Spinner series ala the Single Wing with an unbalanced line? If so adjust your front accordingly and contain. If, on the other hand its a gun with the QB pivoting 180 you have to contain well. As the other poster suggests it is a form of misdirection where the QB is trying to get the corner with fakes to one or the other back. So too will you have to play disciplined football. If they run this from the spread odds are your Linemen and LB will be carrying the load on these since the CB and Safeties are playing purely coverage.
With a 4-3 I would have Mike on the QB. With a 4-4 I would swap side to side based on his spin move. Read and scrape as opposed to coming down hill. Assign the inside backers the backs and the outside the Spinner based on which way he spins. The real question is what does his line do? there could be a tip there as a lot of Spinners will not only misdirect with the Backs but the Guards as well. See if the guards stay with the QB or go with the Backs. My guess is that unless the kids is a man amongst boys they will give him some protection ala a guard or tackle.
Its not about how much YOU know about the game, its about how much you share that knowledge with the people around you.
