Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Trying to make it fairly simple for my kids to defend the wing T, we are a 5-3 look for the most part, we play LOTS of cover 0. We are looking to do something like this
-----------------A--B
Cover 0, C's on X and Z, S on Y, F on B. Strong end is ripping through TE outside shoulder, T is stuffing B, wrong arming trap or trying to string out downblock. Nose is playing strong A, not allowing reach from center. Sam is C gap, Mike is reading C, Weak G and A, if center reaches playing to buck sweep, if center blocks back coming to A back through hole vacated by C, weak end is coming hard at B, if B and T go away keeping outside leverage playing for waggle. Will reads T to B if they go away screaming tackle trap, if the tackle blocks down on our tackle he is getting outside @ 45 degrees playing for waggle. Just wondering if anyone had any thoughts
In my experience with Wing-T, trap and buck sweep are #1 and 1a to deal with. The only thing I would do is reduce your weak side down a bit to make sure that your trap defense is a little better. I would do something like this...
Here's my rationale. Moving the nose, WT, and WE down a technique will sure up your trap defense, and will allow your DT's to get into the G pockets when the G pulls on the buck sweep. Will having outside responsibility for toss. WE is head up on the T (can't get that shown here). Now all this is moot if your Nose and MLB are absolute beasts and can handle the trap by themselves.

There is nothing that will show a man's true character like the 2 yard line.
ROVER = Line up in gap between Wing & TE. On the movement of the ball - shoot inside off hip of TE & then flat down the LOS behind the heels of the O-Line. D Gap responsibility. Wrong shoulder any inside/out block. NOTE: If Wing motions away – contain rush (no wrong shoulder).
DE (Wing Side) = 6 technique head up on TE. On the movement of the ball - shoot off hip of OT & then flat down the line behind the heels of the O-Line. C Gap responsibility. Wrong shoulder any inside/out block.
DT (Wing Side) = Conventional 3 technique – outside shoulder of OG. B Gap responsibility. Wrong shoulder traps.
DT (SE Side) = Conventional 1 technique – inside shoulder of OG. A Gap responsibility.
DE (Split End side) = 4 technique head up on OT. On the movement of the ball – shoot off hip of OG & then flat down the line behind the heels of the O-Line. B gap responsibility. Wrong shoulder any inside/out block.
WILL = line up on outside shoulder of TB (on the LOS). Go through outside shoulder of TB. Contain technique. C Gap responsibility.
S/S = line up on Wing at a depth of 3-4 yds. Squeeze-Contain if Wing blocks Rover. Cover Wing M/M on all passes UNLESS he motions away – then you have the FB M/M.
Mike = Line up 3 yds deep straddling Center’s leg to Wing/TE side. You have strongside A gap on plays to you (stay at home if you lose sight of the ball thru mis-direction). If the play goes away – cautious inside/out pursuit. Cover FB M/M on show pass (you may tackle him on his fake on waggle pass).
Corners = line up 7 yds deep on inside shoulder of TE & SE. Cover him M/M. NOTE: Corner on TE side fills vs. run if TE blocks.
F/S = Line up 7 yds deep on inside shoulder of TB. Cover him M/M UNLESS he goes to opposite side – then you have the FB M/M. NOTE: Fill vs. run if TB blocks.

This is a "homemade "special" vs a traditional Delaware Wing-T offense. Looking at a Delaware Wing-T playbook - they do NOT motion over to the OTHER side & throw the ball to the motion WB or TB. It then becomes something other than a Wing-T. Can adjust Cover 0 (more than 1 way to do it) according as to WHO ends up the #1 receiver to side of extended motion (Corner's man), WHO ends up the #2 receiver to side of extended motion (F/S's man), etc. Also - COULD "CHECK COV. 3".
The Motion I refer to is SHORT motion used for Buck-Sweep, Waggle, Counter XX, etc (TRADITIONAL Wing-T plays). IF it is extended motion all the way to the other side - to various other sets (could be many possibilities) your coverage RULES have to adjust to that - just as (for example) a coverage vs. a Pro Set team that motions the Flanker over to a Slot on the other side (or vice versa).
We write up ALL our basic coverages, showing adjustments to motions & formation variations. The number of possibilities is mind-boggling.
This may not be a satisfactory answer to your question. The only way to get it right is complete film breakdown of WHAT they do from the motion you mention, etc.
If you need to talk about this in more depth (or see a sheet on how a particular coverage to various motions or formations) - phone ME AT 804-378-0116 (up to 9 PM/EASTERN).
PS: Can EASILY adjust the from to a 5-2 LIGHTNING/COV 0:
Thanks coach, don't know that we've seen them doing any extended motion, we only have 1 game of film on them. Just wanted to be safe for any possibilities. Thanks again for the info.
D/END (Wing Side) = line up in gap between TE/WB. Go on snap - come hard on angle for FB. 1. Key FB & if he comes at you (Power Play) - wrong arm him & blow FB up about 3 yds behind LOS. 2. If FB goes away look for block of onside pulling Guard on sweep (get right on him).
D/END (away from Wing): Go on snap - come hard on angle for TB. 1. Key QB on waggle - TB goes away & G's come to you = WAGGLE. 2. TB goes away & G's go away = run play down from backside.
TNT = base fundamentals (Tackles = 4 technique & Nose = 0 technique).
MIKE & WILL = Base 30 tech (key Guards). If you read Guards pull on Waggle you can blitz the gap (TE/WB right & G's pull left, & vice-versa).
SAM (Cover 0) covers WB, & S/C covers TE. If WB blocks DE - S/S must squeeze contain (tough). S/C fills also if TE blocks down. If WB motions away - you now cover FB.
F/S (Cover 0) = M/M on TB. If TB goes away - pick up FB (waggle, etc.)
You can play the 50 front vs. any of there formations. If they are double tight double wing play the TE side of the defense to both sides. If they are split end and slot to one side and tight end wing to the other play it just as its drawn. If they are double slot play the split side of the defense to both sides. If they are split end slot and TE dive back then play the defense as drawn.
PS: Slanting the backside 4 technique the the 0 technique towards the TE is a GREAT CHANGE-UP. IF the G's pull towards the TE - get in their hip pockets & they take you TO the play.
Oneback: Have you ran a version of your 4-3 lightening or your 50 front defenses that you normally run against Wing T, against anything else during the season?
We play our rival the last week of the season and they are a Wing T/Double Wing team. But I was wanting to run it some against some I and wishbone offenses throughout the season so they are familiar with it.
You CAN run it vs. some other things. We usually stick with our BASE 4-2-5 (& blitz package). Our 4-2-5 ADJUSTS automatically to a 4-3 vs. SOME 3x1 looks, so we already had the 4-3 in our package.
