We teach our OB's to read the end man on the LOS. If the OB is on the weak side (no TE), is there a better read than the offensive Tackle?

Here's what we teach:

Techniques: WIDER IS BETTER!!!!
1. Razor: 3x4 off of EMOL (TE SIDE)
2. Blade: Apex EMOL and #1 receiver. Single width = 3x4 off EMOL

Reads:
1. Lane of Ball
2. #2
Razor = TE
Blade = I-back

Style of Play:
1. LOB = 1: Pitch or Option: “FORCE”. Attack LOS and hit FB outside hip. Pitch in option!
2. LOB = 2: Run, Pass, Play Action. Bounce and Read #2, “VICE” or “FLAT”
When you play the “Vice” technique you play a 5 yard fence deep of EMOL
and keep everything from bouncing outside you!!
3. LOB = 3: Pass, “FLAT” read #2 and drop flat.

IF the LOB is AWAY from you, you automatically become a “VICE” player using the 5 yard

We tell our OLB's to read the OT (even if there is a TE on his side) for that very reason...we feel like the read can get mixed up more easily with the TE. They get run/pass from the OT then pick up flow.

Pass = Curl-Flat if zone. If #2 is INSIDE get width more quickly underneath #1. If #2 is OUTSIDE get depth & look to reroute #2 vertical - then width. Cover #2 in man.

Run + Flow TO = Force (meaning the ball must go back inside or 2-3 yds DEEPER than intended of it bounces outside - which is acceptable). We DO tell them they have pitch vs. option look (they are the ONLY defenders we ask to ID "option" per se). Run + any other Flow = drag the anchor (vice). We use the "fence" rule here too.

Its simple and works well for us. The only problem we OCASSIONALLY have is a false key with an OT pass setting on a run play (for example a zone). That back side OLB is sometimes needed for cutback support and when he gets a pass set he may drop instead of "vicing".
