I am a rookie HC. This past weekend we lost a heartbreaking game in the final seconds. During the game one of my captains approached me on the sidelines and told me that one of our JV coaches who was assisting in sideline management was being very negative in his comments toward the players. Towards the end of the game, during a highly emotional and tense moment in the game I hear this JV coach yelling. I turned around and yelled at him to please shut up.
After we had lost the game and the kids were heading back to the bus, he confronts me on the field saying I had disrepected him. I became furious that he was being so selfish and couldn't wait until we had gotten back to the office to discuss it. I told him that I was trying to win the game and I can't worry about people's feelings. He said something like "Oh, so being the head coach gives you the right to disrespect people?" Before I could respond my DC pulled us apart.
I had time to think about the incident and clear my head, and when we got back to the school, he immediately went to get in his car and leave. I flagged him and down and apologized for losing my cool. He had tears streaming down his face, and accepted my apology.
Today (now 48 hours later) I can still tell he has hard feelings. I have about lost my patience. I consider myself a coach's coach and my staff has great comraderie, but at the end of the day I am the head coach and when it comes to football I am in charge. I have been yelled at by a head coach before and I never took it personally, so I am having a hard time understanding why this guy was so offended.
What do you guys think? Was I in the wrong? Should I have apologized? I am planning on having a meeting with him to get some closure to the issue, but what should I do if this guy still seems resentful?
Sorry this is so long, but I appreciate all your thoughts.
