We had a quite an experience this morning and just wanted to share this will all of you that can relate to it here on the board.
After suffering our first loss of the season last week, we faced a 2-3 team today which had played by far the toughest schedule in our league so far this season. The team features our league's fastest player, a back that is 130 lbs. and posted a 5.15 auto-timed 40 at our pre-draft combine this year. We have several kids who run in the mid 5's but noone capable of catching this kid in the open field. Realistically, a loss would pretty much exclude us from making the playoffs.
We kicked off to open the game and this back takes it to the house on us from about 65-70 yards out on the first play from scrimmage. Although I'm still pretty confident that we will score some points on this team, it seems like today may be a very long (or quick) day... again. We stumble into the half down 24-7 and I was truly as dejected as I can ever remember being at any point in any season. I just felt like maybe I had lost the ability to get my kids to play and said a few words about showing some pride during the second half before walking off to collect my thoughts. My assistants addressed the team and to my surprise, my 15 year old son, who films our games for us, asked one of the coaches if he could address the team. I didn't hear everything that he said, but he basically pointed out to the kids how much myself and the other coaches had invested in our team and that they had a tremendous amount of God-given ability and needed to hold up their end of the bargain and go out the next half and kick some tail. I cut "Knute Rockne" off at that point, hugged him and thanked him for taking the initiative to talk to our kids.
We got the ball to start the second half, put together a good drive and scored to make the score 24-14. We then recovered a middle onside kick and drove about 40 yards to bring the score to 24-21. On their next possession, a holding call on third and long called back another long scoring run by their star and we held on fourth down to get the ball back. Again, we put together a drive and took the lead 28-24 in the final seconds of the 3rd quarter. After holding them again on subsequent possessions, we scored again twice, making the final score, unbelievably 41-24, us.
I have never experienced a comeback like that and still am trying to figure out how we pulled that off.
Wow, the highs and lows that the game can provide!
