We were called for a sideline infraction (too many coaches in the box). We were warned on the first play of the game. this came in the 3rd quarter when we were up 21-20. this touchdown was called back. As bad as i think the call is, they also inforced it wrong. All non-player fouls should be marked off after the play. At the time, i didnt know that and the TD didnt count. we lost the game 39-34.
I realize that rules are rules, but I think sometimes the referees get confused and forget that they are not supposed to be the spotlight of attention. In a big game that is that close, you don't make that call on a 90 yd TD, especially if there hadn't been a warning since the 1st play. I can understand if you are interfering with the play of the game or even the chain crew. You make that call early in the game and then it isn't a problem later.
the sideline referee didnt really explain it to us. he said that we are only allowed to have three coaches in the sideline box. we were later told he ran into a cameraman; however the only cameraman i see on the film is the one on the opposite 35 yard line. what really bothers me is that when you have a 5 man crew, not one of them knew how to properly mark off the penalty, even if the call deemed appropriate. our head coach called the head of the state and he told us 1) that this penalty has never been actually marked off in a game in our state, 2) should not have been called in a game that was 21-20 in the third quarter, and 3) if called, was marked off incorrectly. the crew was suspended for the following week. this cost us a shot at winning plus it took a home playoff game away from us.
this took place in KY and for the last two years, emphasis has been placed on horsecollar tackling and sideline infractions. honestly, our team and opponents have been warned almost every game for the sideline infraction and i have seen about 20 flags at least on horsecollar tackling. with that said, we have had zero flags for holding this year. i dont think referees even call holding anymore and as the OL coach, we will be more aggressive with our hands next year, that is for sure since they are letting lineman get away with it.
I can't stand it when referees/umpires try to show everyone how well the know the rules by calling some obscure rule--inevitably they screw something up. We saw a few horsecollar tackles called too--but not that number. Sidejudges were warning teams to keep back from the sideline, but I don't think I only saw one flag thrown--after a "official" sideline warning to them.

There is nothing that will show a man's true character like the 2 yard line.
Coach, that's a tough break. In Illinois this past season the new rule was only the head coach was allowed in the sideline box. Needless to say most refs did not enforce it as long as we gave them enough room to operate. We only had one ref who warned us and flagged us for 15 yards because we had too many coaches in the box.
