Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
they ran power jet sweep to the TE side all night. The playside T pulled around the Wing to seal off the inside.....the reciever went in for the safety......the fullback kicked out the CB.......TE and W blocked down
how would you align to this and after snap what will you tell your players to do?
This is an unbalanced formation and if you sit in your base with no adjustments you are outnumbered. In our standard 4-4 playing 3 deep when they motion the Wing over for the Jet Sweep the Outside Backer will sprint with him and turn up at the snap and tackle him. Play over. FS will adjust with motion also and Outside Backer to the strong side will set the edge.
You have it drawn with the TE to the strong side(ineligble by alignment) and the T to the weakside.(ineligible by #) Most offenses will bring the T over to the strong side and put the TE to the weakside.
We saw a version of this formation from a number of our opponents this past season and it also gave us trouble. We playded solid defense all year with the exception of the sectional championship when we saw this formation along with 1 Back Double Wing 2x2. They motioned the wings ran midline, outside veer and belly g, along with a wide toss to the wing motion man. We took away the FB and were OK on the pitch, thought we had the QB covered also but did not get this done. They were getting the wing or tackle down our inisde backer even though we had bumped him with the motion. Maybe we should have attacked him right away on the QB. Also, got burned on a couple of play action passes out of this formation to the weakside receivers. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
This may be as simple as just shifting your defense over to treat the PSG as C...although I know many coaches are not comfortable with that kind of shift. Whatever you do, just simply count out from midline. Each man on the midline counts as .5 and one for everyone outside. As drawn, that formation has 6.5 strong and 4.5 weak. Make sure you are never outnumbered by more than .5 men on either side of the ball (preferably even numbers).

There is nothing that will show a man's true character like the 2 yard line.
On jet motion, blitz your CB off the edge and have safety pick up the X. Do this 30-50% of the time (or they will throw short to the X). You will throw them for a loss 2 or 3 times and they should give up on the play.

I too subscribe to what Coach Kelly said. We dont over react to unblanaced, we simpy bump everyone over a technique and ball play ball. if they are over a 80% tendency to that side, I will also slide the LBs over a full technique or possibly always slant that way instead of moving lbs. Lots of options.
My thoughts are that they are going unbalanced for a reason, either to pound the ball to that side (which most do) or to try to get you to over play that side and hit you weak side.
Shoot me an email if you want more detail.
