I put this in a dead thread. I have done alot of s tudy on press man, and I thought iIwould posts some of the coaching points.
Ill give you the coaching points for press man. Highly effective I believe.
1. Stance: align with your outside eye on the receivers inside eye. KEEP EYES ON THE BELT.
2. Hands at the "holster" position(like your going to grab your guns on your holster) ready to strike.
3. If the receiver tries an inside release we want to strike him with two hands. Strike with the inside hand to bicep area, and outside hand to chest plate area. AS WE STRIKE WE ARE GOING TO POUND THE INSIDE FOOT. PICK YOUR INSIDE FOOT UP AND PUT IT BACK DOWN AGAIN. NO ONE GETS INSIDE YOU--EVER!!!! KNOCK HIM DOWN IF YOU CAN!!!
4. Outside release: We want to flatten the outside release. (that is why we cant align to far inside) we flatten the outside release with a one hand hit with the inside hand to the bicep area (drill it drill it drill it--7 on 7 is a good time to do it).
5. After the receiver releases we want to play inside trail technique. Run along the receivers hip. Close enough to pull his belt (we don't actually pull the belt--except in a few drills). We want to be "chewing triceps." Some coaches say "chew ears."
6. We do not want to look back for the ball until the last second. Not until the receiver lifts his hands up to go coach the ball (yes that long). When we do we will place our inside hip into the receiver and jump for the ball at its highest point ideally. We can also pull the receivers hands apart as he tries to catch the ball.
7. If we are playing inside trail, and the receiver chops to go inside we chop and stay on the receiver's hip making the quarterback throw the ball over us to the receiver.
8. Remember WE ARE PLAYING THE MAN NOT THE BALL (for the most part). If the receiver releases into the flat we DON'T LOOK BACK FOR THE BALL WE PLAY THE MAN. (the out and up will kill you if you look back) Once the receiver goes for the ball we tackle him and place an arm on his arms to try to knock the ball out.
