Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
As mentioned I run a spread option (Navy,Georgia Tech) I looking to change or keep some of our pass protections schemes. If willing to help I would like your scheme for the different quarterback and route set's for: Sprint, Three Step, and 5 step.
For sprint out: Rules are like outside zone. Reach-bucket step to the sprint out side. Never get beat across the face. We sprinted out about 100 times this year and it worked for us. Single back leads and blocks first guy outside the DE (OLB/SS).
For 3 oand 5 step, our protection is the same with the exception of their feet. With three step, my OL is aggressive upfront. With 5 step, i want them kick sliding and gaining depth off the ball. Our center makes an odd or even call. If even (40), our OTs lock on DEs. G on DT. C/G combo NT to MLB. FB gets other inside LB, always working a-b-c gap. If center calls odd (30), our PST locks up on PS DE. Everyone else slides and protects gap away from the playside call. FB combos with PS OT. Ex below.
.....LR.......S.......M......W......RR
...............LE.......N.......RE
...............LT..LG.C.RG..RT
.........................FB
If a right call,
RT blocks RE FB Blocks W to RR RG and C respnsible for N and M. LG and LT responsible for any combination of LE/S/LR stunt/blitz.
If the DL shade, all of the above works out. It is basically a slide protection but i dont want the FB blocking a DE.
I like a full slide for 3 step protection, but if you do not want your FB blocking a DE, you can use a 4 man slide and slide the line to the 3 tech. Tackle away from the call and RB were BOB. This is what Buffalo did under Turner Gill as their base protection.

I think we are protecting the same way vs. a 40 front, only using different words. Prior to snap, our center makes a rip/liz call in the direction of the 3 tech.
I never referred to this as a 4 man slide before, but it makes simple sense!
the only 50 we see is the 33 stack and a 34 (and that team actually runs more of the old 52 slant defense).
My above post describes what we do. we are in spread so we get the outside Rover/Bandits out of the picture most of the time. Playside Tackle lock on DE. all others slide opposite.
Vs. the 52(34) - we block just like above. Playside OT locks on DE. All others slide away. RB blocks A,B to C gap on the playside.
You could try the following: Playside Assignments-C-G-T On-side gap to Lber; check back door. Backside Assignments G-T On-side gap to Lber. FB attack first man outside tackle's block. Outside in read; no outside threat, seal end to second level.
In our 30 and 50 protection we slide our protection away from the playside with the FB taking the playside edge rusher. Our backside OT has to pick up the wide 9tech most of the time so we ask him to kickstep but the other lineman slide to the away gap. It was a pretty sound prtoection for us. We had 2 problems when the protecttion did break down. 1) sometimes that wide 9 tech we slide our protection to was just faster than our OT. 2) our FB was over powered sometimes. Neither of these issues were consistent.
Have you given any thought to going big on big and then having the FB check backer to DE depending on the front. Have the other back check backside for pressure from tackles man or stunt. No pressure either swing or flat depending on route and coverage. You could start the back in motion and then have him swing back. Just a thought we had the same problem with our weakside Tackle and changed to this.
We only use 3 pass protections in our offense. One Dropback pass protection, One Playaction protection, and one Action pass protection. The Dropback scheme is a man scheme while both our Playaction and Action schemes are slide turnback type protections related more to zone.
