I am entering my third year as a head coach. When I took this job, I inherited my entire coaching staff. I now have to fill multiple openings on the staff, and I am trying to create a list of position specific questions and non-position specific questions to ask in interviews. Does anyone have materials they could send me to assist me in creating my list of questions?
As for position specific questions, unless it's for a coordinator position, I would talk to them about your philosophies and your expectations of them. But the most important things in my opinion would be their loyalty, how much they care about the kids and their enthusiasm for the game. You also want guys that will put time in, (this is not a typical 9-5 job) guys that want to learn and will attend clinics and want to meet with local college coaches. I think X's and O's are over rated, just because someone can stand up at a board and draw plays doesn't mean they can translate it to the field, or get the kids to buy into it..
A HC I worked for once told me that he wants guys that he could spend 2 hours in a car with. In other words you want someone that you can get along with, because it is a long season. I think it takes some time to find the right mix.
