Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
We are tinkering with our alignment vs. one back teams that give us 2X2 formations. We are a small school with all two way players and minimal practice time outside of the season. We are leaning toward playing man under 1 free vs. all 2X2 formations and having the OLB's adjust to formation whether it is a tight end or a slot/wing/twins alignment. We have also discussed sliding the LB's and dropping our weakside OLB into coverage and playing cover 2 with a 4-3 front and having the MLB play two gaps. This breaks some of our rules and reads for our LB's, but we are worried about 4 receivers running all over the field with little help for our LB's. Any thoughts, suggestions? All help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

One thing to look at...don't know if you are a 44 team or not, but we put in a simple 33 stack for the 4 wide look. Depending on our personnel that year, we would add in extra DB's or LB's. Our reads really didn't change that much, we were able to pretty much work the same blitz packages...worked pretty well.

There is nothing that will show a man's true character like the 2 yard line.
Really depends on what they are running out of this set but usually there will be some motion so we play 3 gap and 1 gap Cover 1 when NO Motion occurs, and with motion the FS is the adjustor and plays #2 to the motion, corner plays #1 and the Spur will blitz and play the motion M/M. The two tackles will shoot to the motion. No motion we play 31
22 Stack UP Cover 1: To be easy, we just call this "Eagle"
Base rules will dictate: Motion to Pro trips $ wil play Motion #2 and Buc will play #3 Motion to Open trips $ will play Motion #2 and Buc/Mike will flip and Buc will play #3
OR our FS will be the adjustor for #3 and end up playing cover 0 and send the backer weak side having him blitz peel onto the back out his way. Depends on the team, situation, etc.... But we can do a bunch of little things with the FS/Buc/backside spur to change things up.
We set into our Evil Front against most spread 0 TE sets. (4046) Auto shoot TO STUD.
Under center 2x2 no TE = Evil will set Wide side. MOF he sets Left. Gun 2x2 no TE = Evil will set Away from back. Buc is to the back. (If they flip the back during the cadence, we just leave the front as we are balanced coving him, see below) Open trips = Evil Trips side so he flushes away from the trips.
Buc sets OPPOSITE of Evil. That is how we keep things balanced with covering the back. Evil will peel onto back out his way. Buc will play back out his way. Evil is the free rusher and usually comes off untouched to pressure the Qb to either get rid of the ball or get himi running. Evil and Nose work the DE 2 on 1. If they fan block, Mike immediatly blitzes A gap. Because we are in Man coverage, Mike can focus right into A gap and if he sees an opening, he hits it. Someone ALWAYS comes free.
We are also shooting away from Evil so if Evil is to the right, Evil, Nose, tackle and Stud are all shooting to the left. Buc plays B gap, Mike plays A gap. If center plays the Tackle and the Guard fans, Mike auto blitzes.
I think you have the right idea in playing man free. We would make no checks or adjustments to any 2x2. We try to keep everything as simple as possible and as I have said in other posts, allow the players to play fast.
If you are a 4-4 team, I believe this matches up with no problems vs. 2x2 just playing the coverage called. We play only Cover 3 and Man Free, actually there is very little difference between these two coverages the way we teach them.
The way we teach Cover 3 or man free is to dirupt the routes of #2 or #3 receivers and allow no free release so the FS has a chance to play deep routes.
Vs. 2x2 with Dbl Tight we would align the OLB's 3x1 off of the TE and read the TE. If the TE releases vertical the OLB slides and jams the TE allowing no free release. Vs. run they read the block of the TE and set the edge of the defense.
We would make our strength call to the wide side or left side. DE on weakside stays in a 5 tech.
Vs. 2x2 spread the only difference would be the OB's would now align head up on the #2's about a yard off or so depending on the #2's depth. We want to jam these guys up at the LOS, get physical and own them at the LOS. From there it is easy to read run/pass.
Vs. motion OB's run with #2 and Inside Backers bump away from Trips aligning over 1 Back and 1 yard outside of T on weakside. Bumped inside backer to the weakside sets the edge of the defesne to the weakside.
we also play our "22" front against the 2x2 formations. If it is dbl tight we walk our OLB's up to 9-techs. If they go dbl slot we walk our OLB's out on the #2 WR's. we play cover 1 in both situations.
A lot of good ideas above. When playing cover 1 to that type of set, you may allow the OLB/$ to come off his man on flow towards him (there is only one back so it is not that hard to recognize. You do not want him going to far with a TE blocking inside (especially if he is your force defender). The FS would pick up his TE on play-action so it really converts to cover 0.
