I am a coach at a newer school with no special games or traditions. I'd like to change this, but I am out of ideas as to what to do.
Can you guys give me some examples of some cool traditional games you have or rivalry games with a special trophy, etc. I am looking for something like Paul Bunyan's Axe between Minnesota and Wisconsin or the Little Brown Jug - something like that.
Can you guys share your traditional rivalry games or special travelling trophies? Much appreciated!
Hello. I coach in PA on the East, where rivalry games on Thanksgiving are almost as important (and in some places, MORE important) then the state playoffs. Where I am, there are several really big rivalry games that happen on Thanksgiving, most of them have been being played for several years. In fact, two local suburbs teams that are in the same league do not play their game during the regular season, and intentionally wait until Thanksgiving every year to play it. It has been played I thiknk for 80 some years.
I think the most important thing to get this started is to stay consistent (dont change the game every year with a new opponent) and find a opponent that has some kind of significance to them (neighborhood rival, local private school versus same town public school, etc.) And you are correct, having a trophy to commemorate the win adds value to the game.
But, I think the most important this is to try to find a team that is a natural rival.
