Had a lot of trouble with this formation last year in the sectional championship.

They always run short motion to one side or the other. The run game is run to either side. They run midline option, veer option, belly g and wide toss to motion man. Passing wise they will throw quick to the lone WR and play action off of belly g fake and run routes on the backside to the two eligibles, one usually runs a boot the other runs deep middle or seam and the motion man coming around runs deep to the outside. This is not exactly how we defended it last year but this is my initial plan for this year. With the unbalanced and the wings in tight they have created 9 gaps to defend. One of the things I know we must do a better job of is keeping the tackles/wings off of our inside backers. This is my plan from our 4-4 personel.

Tackles - Head up, Stunt hard into and control A gap, take away FB on midline(We will stunt to B as a mix up on other calls)
Ends - Head up on tackles, Read & mirror tackle, jam him up, keep him on LOS, if he does block inside close & tackle FB on veer dive
Will Backer - Head up on extra Tackle to unbalanced side, Read, mirror & jam same as Ends
Mike Backer - One on One vs. QB on option, one and only read vs. this formation
OB to MO - Head up on slot, read, mirror & jam, allow no free release, set edge of defense, take pitch man on option and be ready to cover him down the side line if play action
OB away from MO - Back Out to 5 yards, cross key opposite side, take away boot route coming back
C to 1 Receiver side - Man to Man
C to Wing Side - Read the two eligibles, Man to man on deepest and widest
FS - Play pass 1st, Bump to EOL vs. motion, read eligibles, cover any route in middle 1/3rd more than 10 yards
Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated. They did a great job of executing this offense. It is similar to Georgia Tech. I really feel as if we need another body up front. We had trouble with the FB or their QB essentially squeezing through D or E gap with the extra blocker to the unbalance side. The plan here is to stop the FB with the front seven, play the QB with the Mike Backer and take the pitch with the OLB.
