Hello coaches,
It's been a long time since I posted last. I have been very busy at getting my coaching career started & have had many interviews with some high school programs & 1 junior college.
I have been learning as much as I can about fundamentals for each position. Here is a check sheet that I plan to use on how I intend to teach QB fundamentals. Let me know what you think & if their is anything I should add or drop.
QB fundamentals
UNDER CENTER
1. position legs about shoulder width apart
2. knees comfortably bent
3. opposite foot of throwing hand slightly a few inches further back than the other. To avoid the OL from stepping on foot after ball is snapped.
4. Distribute weight slightly more on opposite foot of throwing hand. To get out of the way of the OL quicker & be in best possible position for the first step of your drop.
DROP BACK & FOOTWORK
1. 3 step drop. 1 long step, 2 short set & throw steps. Should be about 4 yards deep on drop. Arm should start throwing motion immediately once your foot hits the ground on the last step.
2. 5 step drop. 3 long steps, 2 short set & throw steps. Should be about 5 ½ yards deep.
3. 7 step drop. 3 long steps, 4 short steps. Should be about 7 yards deep. The reason for the 4 short steps is so that anytime the QB sees something open up during his drop back he has his feet in the best possible position for a quick throw. Plus it helps the OTâ??s out in pass protection. You donâ??t want to get too deep.
4. Hitch & gather step. Is added on to the end of the 3,5 or 7 step drops if nothing opens up. You put the back foot back underneath you after last step of drop & step forward.
5. Do NOT step at target with front foot. Canâ??t unlock hips & you will be throwing across your body.
6. When dropping, back keep weight on the balls of your feet.
THROWING
1. When dropping back, hold ball with both hands about chest high. This shortens your release time.
2. When bringing ball back to throw distribute weight on back foot.
3. When throwing to your back side point your back foot toward your target, this naturally will put you in the best throwing position, your hips will naturally open up & you wonâ??t be throwing across your body.
4. Bring ball back about ear high.
5. When coming forward with the throw shift your weight from your back to your front leg.
6. Point your stomach toward your target. Again this naturally will open your hips & prevent you from throwing across your body.
7. Lead with your elbow.
8. Snap wrist at release point so your thumb & pinkie are pointing downward.
9. Your index finger should be the last part of your body that leaves the ball.
What do you think? Is there anything I should add or change? What would you add to this for QB-Center exchange? Having never actually lined up under center Iâ??m not sure of the â??properâ? way to hike the ball.
Also what about the grip on the ball when the QB is throwing.
