Coaches, what is the advantage to running the 31 as your base defense as compared to running the 32i as your base defense? I know that there is only one slight, miniscule difference, but what is the advantage of each?

To me, the 31 protects your weakside linebacker (in a 44 or 4-2-5) and allows him to be a fast player from the backside on running plays to the strong side. The 1-tech forces the center to block him, and if he uses proper technique, the center can't "rub off to LB". The 2i can be moved with line splits, and even with proper technique, he still may occasionally be reached by the BSG, allowing the Center to block the weakside linebacker.
I prefer a 1-tech, especially if my weakside linebacker is not a physical player.

A 32i would be effective against a team who likes to run weakside especially iso when it is run to the B gap with a lead blocker. The 2i cuts down the seam and gives your LB's a smaller b gap to control.

A retired coach explained the difference to me. We were talking about Tommy Tuberville's 4-3 and he told me it depended on your personnell. In order for your DT to play in a 1 technique he needs to be quick. If he is slower, it is better to have him in the 2i because of blocking angles. If he is slow and in a 1 technique the guard has an easier time washing him down then if he is in the 2i. Just a little thought.
