We really stress getting butt to butt on the combo to start with, eyes on the LB, hand on the DL. We try to tell them that a perfect combo puts the DL into the LB's lap and never come off until you HAVE to. We just rep the heck out of whipping that DL. For us that is the primary goal of the combo. We obviously want to get to the second level, but in most cases for us if we crush the DL the backer has nowhere to go to get to the play. I know many coaches teach the first step of both OL is supposed to be playside, we teach step with the foot closest to the gap defender you are comboing, this gets our OL butt to butt and prevents the DL splitting the combo, it also helps to keep the wider OL from just running up to the second level.
