When using a 4-4 (or 4-2-5) defensive front does anyone align the defensive ends anywhere OTHER than a 5 and 7 technique? Do you ever move the 5 to a 4i or the 7 to a 9, etc. 4-3 teams use a 5 and 9, why do 4-4 teams prefer a 5 and 7?
We used to move them around quite a bit. I personally liked my DE's in an 8 (head up on TE) on the strong side. Our rule was that if they were not aligned on on the last man on the LOS somewhere, we moved an OLB/SS down to the LOS in a 2-pt stance.

There is nothing that will show a man's true character like the 2 yard line.
DEFENSIVE ENDS & ILBers USE THE "ADUSTMENT TECHNIQUE" = A NATURAL "X" — MAKING ADJUSTMENT IN GAP RESPONSIBILITY DUE TO CHANGE IN DEFENSIVE END'S ASSIGNMENT:
DEFENSIVE ENDS: LINE UP IN A 5 TECHNIQUE (INSIDE SHOE TO CROTCH OR OUTSIDE FOOT OF THE OT). READ THE OT: 1. IF THE OT BLOCKS DOWN INSIDE — CRASH OFF OT'S BUTT TO B GAP. 2. IF THE OT BLOCKS YOU — STAY ON HIS OUTSIDE HALF IN C GAP.
MIKE (ILBer): LINE UP FACING THE B GAP & 4 YARDS DEEP. READ THRU THE B GAP (TO SEE OT'S BLOCK) TO THE NEAR BACK (FOR FLOW). 1. IF THE OT BLOCKS INSIDE & YOU SEE HIS COLOR IN B GAP — SCRAPE TIGHT OFF DE'S BUTT TO C GAP. 2. IF THE OT BLOCKS DE & YOU DO NOT SEE HIS COLOR IN B GAP — FILL QUICKLY IN THE B GAP.
