Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Coaches any input would be helpful. We were working on the triangle mesh drill last night for the first time and it seemed like the FB was getting to the mesh so quick it was hard for the QB to even read at all. I had the QB 3 yards of the ball and the FB's feet at 6 yards off in a 3pt stance. I know many go from the 2pt, but I like the fact that the FB is hidden. Is this just a matter of reps or is there something we can adjust to make our mesh better. I don't want to slow down our FB, but it just seems that it happens so quick the QB can't read. Maybe our footwork is wrong. We have the QB step at 3 or 9 O'clock, gather step and extend. Should the QB step toward the line of scrimmage?
I'm an under-center veer guy--and that's what we want there. We teach that it's the QB job to meet the back at the mesh, if he's late, it's his fault. From my experiences with gun option, it is a much slower deliberate read...I'd imagine pistol needs to be somewhere in the middle. Rather than slow the back down, adjust his feet--maybe putting them at 6.5 or 7 is all that needs to be done. When when he gets comfortable with it, the QB should be able to take a pre-snap read and have a good idea if he's going to give or keep before the ball is even snapped, but definitely want to be able to recognize what is happening.

There is nothing that will show a man's true character like the 2 yard line.

Coach in the Pistol we align our QB at about 2 1/2 to 3 yards. The first sttep by the QB is flat and then at a 45 degree angle with his backside foot towards the inside hip of this guard using a hop skip into the L.O.S. great play from pistol. Coach Campbell
What Coach Campbell says. I will add that if your center is lolipopping or dogging the snap that will mess up the mesh timing. I like to use a long ride if possible to sell the play better. Back hip to front leg, the footwork and ride have to be second nature for the QB or he wont be able to start his read quick enough. Peripheral vision is used. Like any other system you have got to dedicate the time in practice to make the options worth while. If you're doing this to run it once in a while, I would reconsider as you aren't spending enough time perfecting this. The Option imho, has got to be the base and the other material the add ons.
Its not about how much YOU know about the game, its about how much you share that knowledge with the people around you.
