stopping the Triple Option

Thanks for Responding, I think it's the I-Veer and i'm a 4-2-5 Guy but i've used a 3-5-3 in the past in shut them out. The Ends & Nose have Dive- the Will & SS have pitch & sometimes a change up to QB, Bandit & Rover has QB unless change up call. OKIE DOG PINCH



I visited Notre Dame (Ara Parseghian's D-Staff) in 1974 to get the DETAILS on"OKIE-DOG-PINCH", & have used it ever since.

In all the posts I've seen on this site - no one has it exactly as ND played it. If anyone is interested in the MORE DETAILS - phone me at 804-378-0116 (from 10 AM thru 9 PM/EASTERN).

I have the complete defense (with adjustments) from Notre Dame's Game Plans vs. ALABAMA (& Bear Bryant). It CAN be adjusted to motion out of the backfield, & it CAN be adjusted to 2 back sets (by running it on ONE side, & playing base 5-2 on the other), but it is (of course) best vs. FULL BACKFIELDS (TE or SE's do not matter at all).

In CASE diagram shifts - both E's, T's, & Nose are HEAD UP:

Both Safeties shoot for hip of near back. Force "squeeze contain" D gap/pass rush. NO pass resp.

Both E's crash inside off hip of OT's.

Both T's crash inside off hip of OG's.

Both LBers key Near HB or TB (if he goes to YOUR side - MIRROR him; if he goes to opposite side of Center - fill away between Nose & pinching DT). Cover the HB's M/MN on pass.

Nose = 2 Gap player (both A Gaps).

Both Corners M/M on TE's (or split end if one or both split out).

ND knocked Bear Bryant out of the National Championship in 1975 with this. EQUALLY good vs Full Wishbone, Power I, Full Stack I, & full T backfield.

PS: Bama tried motioning a HB out of the backfield in desperation (late in the game). ND's ADJUSTMENT was:
The DB on the TE goes with the motion back. The 30 tech. ILB on the side the back motions to stacks behind the 4 tech. & covers the TE if he releases (so you do NOT "deplete the box"). With the enormous pressure - it is still just as hard to run OR pass on.

If it counts for anything we have found the ODP to be very good against the option especially full house etc. The only time we have had problems was vs. an I option team whose TE absolutley thrashed our C gap player all night. They did go on to be undefeated and win a state championship, so I think it might have been a personell issue rather than a problem with the scheme.

Great ideas. Don't try to reinvent the wheel with your guys, put them in a solid base to stop the option. Iowa vs GT this season, if that Mike Linebacker can hammer the dive from a 4-3 defense you force either QB keep or a pitch. Fill up the gaps, defeat blocks, keep it simple!

Iowa played 4-3 Over/Cover 2.

CORNERS on pitch. Safeties LATE to the alley.

LBers slide over on motion (just enough to gain advantage).
