Coaches,
We are a 3-5 team. I was just wondering if any of you have a GENERAL set of "situation-response" guidelines you use when deciding what type of pressure to bring.
I know that a lot of it comes down to tendencies of your opponent, but is there a general set of strategies to use based on down-distance or anything like that? I know that you don't want to send pressure just for the sake of sending pressure.
Anything you coaches might have that could help a young defensive coach would be GREATLY appreciated.
As a HS coach, I like pressure in long passing situations unless there is an experienced QB who can hurt you. Blitz early and often unless you are running against a good wing-T or good option team. Put pressure on any team that you have a question on their poise.

There is nothing that will show a man's true character like the 2 yard line.
I think it depends on who you are facing. I lean towards the more conversative usually, for example, if a team is 75%-80% pass on third down and more then 7, I will probably not blitz as much if the QB I am going against is good. If a primary running team has you at 3rd and long and all of a sudden become a pass tendency (75-80%) I dont blitz either usually. My thoughts there are if throwing isn't what they do well, then why give the offense a chance to out athlete you. We disguise coverage so you will rarely if ever know what coverage we are running pre-snap.
But, both of these are also determined by field position. If a team has a tendency to go for it on 4th and short, I will blitz more. Also, third and long in the green zone I will blitz more as well. The thought process there is we will tackle everything before the first down marker and get the offense back on the field. But, if they go for it on 4th and short a good amount, then I'll bring more pressure.
I have been blessed with kids that cover well enough in zone, but not who blitz to the level of effectiveness that I want all the time.
My point being that there isn't any set rule for me. I say, do your tendencies, realize you your kids are good at and not good at, look at what your opponent is good at, then put your kids in the best position based on your analysis.
