Can anyone advise please if they have ever seen a 6 inch backwards step from a level stance with the snapping hand coached ?. I do not coach this myself but a fellow coach believes this puts the center in a position to take his power step as per the guards and tackles. My opinion is that this is an unnecessary movement in the centers footwork.
I wouldn't teach it that way. It sort of goes against biomechanics, if I am understanding what you are saying it seems like it would be pretty awkward to step backwards with the foot on the same side of the body as the hand that is going backwards. It seems to be wasting movement in a position that is already at a disadvantage, I want my center to get his body where it needs to be ASAP, if nothing else he needs to be getting his head playside even if his hand is still between his legs, that would be tough with a backwards step. Lateral step yes, depending on the alignment of the defender. The closer he is to head up the more upfield movement the center should be getting on his first step. Maybe I am misunderstanding something though.

The only time I teach the center a backwards step is versus a dead headed nose in straight dropback protection. This allows the center to anchor himself. Coach Campbell
