how often or what percent do most defensive coaches blitz during a game? I know some coaches blitz every play and others blitz only in some situations.
I believe it really depends on your talent, your defensive philosophy and who you're playing. If I had the talent to stay in a base defense and hold a team down, I don't think I would blitz at all. On the other hand, if I were playing a superior talented team, that had strong tendencies, I would try to do a lot of D line games and combos with blitzes to make their O line think a little bit and hopefully confuse their blocking schemes.
Other blitzing philosophies I have seen in the past have been dictated by field position. Some coaches blitz very little when the opponent is on their side of the 50 yd line, but when they cross their side of the 50, they begin to blitz a little more. As a team gets closer to the red zone and in, they become even more aggressive. The idea behind that philosophy is on a shorter field you can gamble more and be less likely to give up the 30+ yd big play.
It really depends on your style of calling a defense. Just remember, when you blitz, you increase the chances to make a big play on D, but also open yourself for big plays against you if your blitzes are pick up! Be creative and don't be predictable. And you will be fine.
its users preference really. I have coached on teams that blitz often and teams that blitz never. Both are just as affective. But if i learned one thing, it's dont blitz in response to anything. If you are going to blitz it needs to be based on the film you have seen and the gameplan you have.
Personally, if I am coordinating offense, I hate to see blitzing teams in high school. Yes, I may be able to gash them with some play calls, but teams that "live and die by the blitz" will also make my offense think way more than I want them to which can lead to issues.

There is nothing that will show a man's true character like the 2 yard line.
To KEEP from getting "gashed" = our "TIGERCAT" max-blitz sends the 4 LBers in the "first-wave". The 4 DLM execute their run reads first & then if they read "pass" - they execute normal pass rush in the second wave (that takes care of draws or traps, etc.), that might crease ther FIRST WAVE (4 LBers).
We still get an 8 man blitz vs. 2 back sets (7 vs. one back sets).
I think from the sound of your tigercat, that you would NEED a pass protection scheme that could pick up 4 to each side so you don't have to be forced to throw sights. At least in 3rd and long. Might be able to get away with sights on 1st and 10 though.
