Defending the Veer

5-2, OR, 4-4 (not both).

A) 5-2 VS VEER OPTIONS:

NOSE = DIVE

TACKLES = DIVE

ILB = DIVE - SKATE TO QB IF NO DIVE (normally had Dive on Inside Veer, & QB on Outside Veer).

DE = OUTSIDE VEER = DIVE; INSIDE VEER = QB

SECONDARY RUN FORCE = OUTSIDE VEER = QB TO PITCH; INSIDE VEER = PITCH

F/S = OPTION = ALLEY FILL; PASS = VEER PASS

B) 4-4 VS VEER OPTIONS:

TACKLES = SAME AS 5-2 (DIVE)

ILB = SAME AS 5-2 (DIVE - SKATE TO QB IF NO DIVE) Normally ends up on Dive on Inside Veer, & QB on Outside Veer.

DE's = SAME AS 5-2 (NORMALLY HAS QB ON OPTION BUT MAY END UP ON DIVE IF DIVE-BACK ATTACKS HIM WITH BALL - ILBers & DE's SOMETIMES ARE FORCED TO EXCHANGE RESPONSIBILITIES).

SECONDARY RUN SUPPORT = SAME AS 5-2 (OLBers = NORMALLY HAVE PITCH ON OPTION)

F/S = SAME AS 5-2. STRONG RUN SUPPORT IN ALLEY.

"COMMON SENSE RULE" = USED VS. OPTIONS:

In each defense a player is assigned a specific part of the option. Then add on to their rule the words "OR THE FIRST MAN TO SHOW WITH THE BALL". Thus, if I am a Defensive End whose main responsibility is Quarterback on the option, my rule is "QB OR THE FIRST MAN THAT CHALLENGES ME WITH THE BALL". By doing this should a blocking scheme or play cause our option coverage to break down at a given point, players should be ready to make the necessary adjustment.

IDEAS DEFENDING THE OPTION


1. Make things happen quick for the QB — make offense speed up everything they do.

2. Create guessing game so put pressure back on offense.

3. Hits on QB — FB will be key to you winning. ATTACK (create TURNOVERS) — tackle the Fullback LOW (hit him EVERYTIME).

4. Movement before snap (example: F/S & both ILBers on motion in "Hawk").

5. Vary techniques more so than assignments.

6. LESS IS BETTER!

7. Secondary (hungry to be involved in the run).

8. Pre-Season take 4-5 day section to work on the option.

9. Practice Specifics — Half Line

10. Monday — work on option 15 minutes regardless who you play.

11. Run down QB from backside — hit him low from behind.

12. If you are going to read, they are going to read (make all reads post-snap not pre-snap).
