A few questions about summer passing leagues / passing tournaments.
1) How many of you participate in local passing leagues?
2) How many of you host passing league date(s)?
3) How many of you host an organized passing tournament?
4) How many of you participate in one?
5) If it was affordable and local, how many of you would participate in one?
Here in SoCal it is illegal for teams to attend full contact team camps. I have read about a few team camps and became very interested. But, rules are rules and no dice. So I am exploring the idea of starting an annual Passing Tournament. I figure it would address a few things at once; Fund raising, team building, practice against opponents, and an overall good time to name a few.
If any of you have any feedback it would be appreciated. If anyone hosts such an event, some info on how to do it would especially be appreciated.
Coach, this is how I can answer the following questions you have posted:
A few questions about summer passing leagues / passing tournaments.
1) How many of you participate in local passing leagues? We do.
2) How many of you host passing league date(s)? We are not involved in a passing league, but we have individual passing scrimmages. However, my friend coaches in Nevada, and he says that the majority of teams in the state are in passing leagues.
3) How many of you host an organized passing tournament? We do not, but we have the opportunity to attend several throughout the off-season and pre-season at various division 1AA, 2, and 3 colleges.
4) How many of you participate in one? We do not, but it is available to us.
5) If it was affordable and local, how many of you would participate in one? We don't make a big deal about it, because success in a passing scrimmage potentially gives our student-athletes the wrong impression that they are successful as a team.
Coach, I hope this helped.

We too are in SoCal and we participate heavily in summer passing scrimmages. We usually have some sort of scrimmage once a week with 4 to 5 teams in a non-tournament format. Then on the weekends, we will play in a tournament. We try and schedule a tournament every weekend throughout the summer, but sometimes it's just not possible.
If you are planning on hosting a tournament, I would suggest making it a one-day event only. It's too difficult for teams to show up on back to back days, especially if they have a long drive ahead.
A couple years ago, we went up to UC Santa Barbara where Student Sports was hosting a 2-day tournament. The format was terrible. We were scheduled to play a game late in the afternoon on day one, and were expected to be back at 7:00am the next day for another. We decided not to show up the next day. It was too much of a headache.
Coach Cella - Thank you for the input. I'm trying to get a feel for what's going on. Again, Thank you.
Coach W - Where exactly are you in SoCal, maybe we can continue this conversation on a local level? I am interested in getting as much information I can before Spring Ball.
I'm thinking a 1 day tournament; 1 date; 15 man teams; Winners get T-shirts and a Team Trophy/Plaque; and all teams get lunch and visors.
Setup is: brackets of 4 teams (4 brackets max > We have facilities for up to 8 - 30 YD fields) all teams play 3 games (each team in its bracket), bracket winners play 4 (greatest accumulated points determines bracket winner), tournament finalists play 5; 6 posessions each, 10 plays per posession; points are awarded as follows:
The tournament format sounds good to me. We're usually in the TD and 2 point conversion from the 5 type tournaments, but the point system is good too. Just make sure you have at least two refs at each game to keep track. I can picture some coaches getting into arguements over PI and yardage concerns, but that happens regardless.
From seeing your email addy, you are in the Inland Empire area. We are located in Northern LA County, so that would be a trek to get out there, but we've done it before.
We currently have the Fri/Sat spot of July 18-19 open. Every other spot is filled with a tournament.
Reply and let me know how it works out and what date it would be held.
We, traditionally, have not been big on passing leagues or tournaments. But, as I posted, we are trying to explore new stuff.
If you wouldn't mind, can you please email me some of the info about the other tournaments you are enrolled in. It would help me with setting up ours.
If you are N. LA county, there are no competition issues between us. We're DIV I - CBL. Let me know if there is a conflict of any kind. If so, I understand. Thanks again for the input.
Go to texasfootball.com ... that website has a link on the left side to 7 on 7 passing tounaments - rules, release forms, etc. A great resource for passing tournaments
