Powhatan High and its championship football program might be leaving Region I
The balance of power in Region I football might undergo a drastic change beginning in the fall of 2011, because Powhatan High has applied to move from the Southside District into the Region II Jefferson District.
The Virginia High School League will hear Powhatan's request and decide on it during its Redistricting & Remodification meeting on Tuesday. Four other schools also are requesting to leave Region I, with two looking to move from Group AA to Group A, while two others wish to move to other Group AA districts.
Powhatan has dominated Region I Division 4 in football, winning five of the past six titles. The Indians, who win the Southside football title virtually every season, are a perennial state title contender, having won the D-4 crown in 1996 and 2003, while also reaching the state title game in 1997 and 2005. They've played in five of the past six D-4 state semifinals.
No word from Powhatan as to exactly why they want to make the move, but I'll venture a couple of guesses. Powhatan is, at more than 1,300 students, by far the largest school in the Southside and is the best in most of the sports. ...basketball being one obvious exception.
The school might want to make the move to play a more competitive schedule in football and everything else. It's no secret that many of the Southside schools are far below the caliber of Powhatan and the other Region I districts (Bay Rivers and Battlefield) in most sports.
In addition, many of the Jefferson District schools will be easy for Powhatan to drive to. Jefferson District school Goochland is only about 20 miles away and, driving up the I-64 corridor, Fluvanna, Charlottesville, Monticello and Western Albemarle are within 90 minutes.
The departure of Powhatan would also change the balance of power in Region I baseball. The Indians often contend for the Region I title and won the 2008 Group AA state title, before Poquoson succeeded them as AA state titlist in 2009. Those two are expected to be prime contenders battling for the region's two state tournament berths this year.
