To piggyback on option #2 what if Y were to check release?

So X, H and Z are free releasing. R checks Will to any DB blitzing to the offensive left, and release if no one comes. Y would be checking to see is Sam blitzed, and release if he didn't. Meanwhile RT is reading S, knowing that if S comes he picks him up and Y picks up E, or if he doesn't come, he fans out to E as Y checks and releases.

In a "4-3 Over" (which is the defense which was presented) the 9 tech WILL NOT DROP!

The LOCATION of the SAFETIES tell you EVERYTHING (Pre-Snap giveaway of coverage).

1. Usually the S/S comes down to flat on the side of the OVER in Cover 3.

2. In Cover 4 - the OLB has the flat.

3. In Cover 2 - the Corner has the flat.

4. In MAN coverages - the 9 still comes because the flat is taken by the coverage man whose receiver goes flat.

The 9 comes in ALL of these. He is a DE & playing with his hand down.

PHILOSOPHY VS BLITZ


A) OUR PHILOSOPHY VS THE BLITZ IS TO CALL PLAYS IN ONE OF TWO CATEGORIES THAT ARE GOOD EITHER VS:

1. BLITZ MAN, AND COVER 2 (MOFO), OR
2. BLITZ MAN, AND COVER 3 (MOFC).


B) WE DO NOT AUDIBLE TO DIFFERENT PROTECTIONS BECAUSE:

1. NEVER KNOW WHEN THEY ARE GOING TO COME (CAN BLUFF BLITZ & BACK OUT TO ZONE OR, THEY MAY COME).
2. QB NOT ALWAYS EQUIPPED TO SEE IT THE WAY YOU WANT HIM TO.
3. NOT ENOUGH GAME CLOCK TO AUDIBLE.
4. THEREFORE, WE NEED CALLS THAT ARE GOOD VS EVERYTHING.
5. USE 2 PLAY HUDDLE CALLS, OR "CHECK WITH ME AT THE LINE" — PLAYS THAT DO NOT CHANGE THE PROTECTION CALLED IN THE HUDDLE. THEY FIT INTO ONE OF THE CATEGORIES IN A) ABOVE.


C) AVOID "HOTS" BY USING 7 OR 8 MAN PROTECTION (BE SIMPLE ATTACKING BLITZ SO WE CAN SPEND MORE TIME ON GOOD FUNDAMENTALS — THIS LEADS TO BETTER EXECUTION). REASONS WE DON'T USE "HOT" RECEIVER(S):

1. QB DOESN'T SEE IT — HE GETS HIT!
2. QB SEES IT BUT RECEIVER DOESN'T!


D) MENTAL APPROACH VS BLITZ:

SUMMARY: "KISS" (KEEP IT SIMPLE — THE MORE EFFICIENT YOU ARE, THE MORE YOU MOVE THE CHAINS AND SCORE POINTS)!

PASS PROTECTION "AXIOMS" for Offensive Linemen in BASE (solid) protection. Blocking the base numbers MAN:

Center = 0
Guard = 1
Tackle = 2
H/Y = 3

"MAN" technique coaching "AXIOMS" ("basic" pass-pro technique):

-----A) Set quickly on the LOS (if you are a lineman), set inside (inside foot slightly inside foot of assigned defensive man). IE: Your outside eye on his inside eye.
-----B) If your assignment is a linebacker off the LOS, set back three feet from the LOS so you can better adjust to a linebacker if he stunts around adjacent lineman. If linebacker drops back into pass coverage, your secondary responsibility is to help your inside teammate with his assigned DLM.
-----C) Always take an inside fake - slide inside - never take an outside fake (may adjust body and feet position but don't commit too soon).
-----D) Stay with your man until ball is thrown.
-----E) Over-anxiousness and committing yourself before rusher does can get you in trouble.
-----F) Learn to slide to adjust position. Keep one foot on the ground. Do not pass protect on your tiptoes.
-----G) Make your stand on the LOS if rusher tries to bull rush over you.

Redskins had a lot of protections (5, 6, 7, & 8 man), but they MAJORED in 7 man protection (so do we)!

I coached in their system in 1987-1987 - we supplied them players during the "strike" season.

I have coached the whole gaument of their playbook. They used 6 man pro on early downsa (particuilarly if in "BUNCH"). On third down - they usually were in 7 man pro.

On early downs they threw a lot of "3 Step game" = hitches, etc.). They threw the DEEP game MOSTLY off play action (Counter fake & coming straight back).

JOE GIBBS OFFENSIVE THEORY (1983)

The easiest approach — and the logical one — is to think of the set-up as you would the "I". But, now you have the "I" fullback up near the L.O.S. on either side, and he is called the "H" back.

Much of your motion comes from moving your "H" from one side to the other. The movement creates problems for the defense in that they must determine how to support the corner of the defense and at the same time account for coverage on each receiver.

By being close to the L.O.S., the "H" back has a higher percentage block than your ordinary "I" fullback would have. At the same time, the "H" position allows a quicker release if he is to be a receiver. Of course, he is not the running threat that your "I" fullback would present, but most "I" teams do not run the fullback as a feature anyway. In addition, you do not have the versatility (of having strength to either side on the snap) that you have in the "I". However, the position close to the L.O.S. does compensate for all of this by being a more effective blocker and receiver as a "H" back (and forces the defense to protect an extra gap). And with the created defensive problems (with movement) as an "H", it more than compensates for the reduced element of surprise. We use our "Counter-Gap" play to keep the defense honest and not over-compensate for the position of the "H" back. A very effective play.

As to an audible system to meet the blitz. When you start with the idea of having considerable movement (principally by "H") you work primarily on sight adjustment by the receivers. If they see blitz, they cut their routes down to take care of the reduced time you have to protect the passer (in addition, our maximum protection scheme gives us the time we need in longer yardage situations without using sight adjustments). It is not feasible to try using verbal signals as an audible system when you use a lot of motion (from any formation).


JOE GIBBS OFFENSIVE THEORY (ARTICLE FOLLOWING SUPER BOWL/1983)

The One-Back concept fits our personnel very well. If we played two backs simultaneously, one would have to do the blocking for the other. When Riggins carried, Joe Washington, who weighs only 180 pounds, would have to block for him. We would rather have one of those backs sitting on the bench resting and have a 250 pound tight end blocking for us.

Second, our offense is better suited to the widespread use of the 3-4 defense. We had nine 3-4 teams to play. These teams have dominating outside linebackers who have taken over the game. When we play the Giants, they have Brad VanPelt and Lawrence Taylor on the outside. If you try to block Taylor with a back, you're going to lose. It's impossible, so it's better to have two tight ends. Then Lawrence Taylor has to rush around a 250 pound blocker if he wants to get into our backfield. That's a whole different story. With four good receivers, we can also threaten downfield with four men off the line of scrimmage.

NOTE: In 1983, the Redskins were 80-90% two tight ends, two wide receivers, and one running back (Riggins). On long yardage, they were one tight end, three wide receivers, and one running back. However, the Redskins mixed this up and use the three wide receiver lineup on first downs when the defense would probably not have a fifth defensive back in the game. Their aim is to match one wide receiver against a strong safety or a linebacker.

The main philosophy is to execute a few plays to perfection out of many looks. The pre-snap movement causes confusion on defense and creates match-up problems.


DON BREAUX (REDSKINS ":oC" UNDER GIBBS) — 2 TE/2 WR/1 BACK

We wanted a formation that would challenge the defense along a broad front and present problems to their pass defense. The only way that the pass defense could be challenged by mere alignment would be to put four eligible receivers up on the line of scrimmage. With the possibility of getting four receivers out into a pattern quickly, the secondary would have to align itself in a sound pass defense. Thus, we came to the conclusion that we would have only one back in the backfield. We decided on a two tight end and two wide receiver alignment with the other people because it presented an eight-gap front to defend vs. the run. We call this formation our "DOUBLE" formation:

This formation is certainly not unique. It has been used by many other teams. However, in the past a one-back formation was mostly thought of as a passing set, and it was used primarily in those situations. We wanted to use that threat of the pass to create a better opportunity to run, and on the other hand we wanted to have a good chance to pass by virtue of the formation in a run situation. The two tight end front gave us a chance to spread the defense out. If the defense was to honor our passing threat by using four of it's defenders in the secondary, then there only remained seven defenders to play against an eight-gap front. One defender would have to play a two-gap responsibility. The only way they can defend the extra gap is to close the middle of the field — the formation affects the force of the defense (the Will Lber will be over a Tight End which makes the Lber force soft). THIS FORMATION GIVES THE OFFENSE AN OPPORTUNITY TO THROW THE FOOTBALL.
