Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
The team that I am going to play on Thursday lines up in punt formation and the punter runs sideways outside the off. T and towards the LOS and then punts the ball after 5-7 steps. Does he lose his kick protection when he runs? I have to defend the run option with an extra defender.
We were told that it is similiar to the protection a QB gets on a pass. If he is set up to punt and the closest defender is 3 yds away you can't hit him, as long as the defender has time to stop he is still protected, but he can't punt it when a kid is diving through the air and expect protection. That is the interpretation we were told. I would check with the ref before the game, they all call it different
It's the old rugby punt. Yes it's a run/pass option to some extent, but more often, it is a way to hide a lack of a good punter. As far as protection, like coach said above, you have to know your officials and what they are going to call as a protected player. On these sets, usually you want to pressure the punter from inside out--if they have a pass fake that is any good. Do not press him with the defender who would have a flat pattern in coverage--use the next man in. Also, be careful about chasing him too hard from the back side to protect against screens.
