Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
We are in a hole offensively right now. We are 0-2 and have lost 21-14 and 14-0. We moved the ball fairly well in the first of those but could only manage just over 100 yards total in the second. We are an I-form team that relies on the iso and power. The team that blanked us was a 4-3 that blitzed very frequently, most the Mike in the A gap. they would also walk the Sam and Will up nearly every play bringing them about half the time. We could not adjust to the speed and were beat off the ball all night. This week we will face a 3-5-3 team with a lot of speed. After they watch this film I'm sure they will bring heat also. Does any one have suggestions? We are a terrible passing team and that is a last resort, it got so bad Friday that we threw it nearly 20 times only completing 4. And our protection was not very good. Please any info or ideas would be greatly appreciated...
I don't think that you can make drastic changes in one week.
Just get better at what you do best. In passing - it's easier to throw three step drops, & a few well executed play actions off your best runs.
Work like hell improving your run & pass blocking fundamentals, & QB/Receiver TIMING in the passing game. New PLAYS are not the answer, because if you can't execute your basic offense, new stuff isn't going to help. If it was THAT good, you would have installed it in early August.
I agree with Coach Mountjoy with the drastic changes comment. As far as bandaids for now, do you run any overload formations that can give you some numbers advantages vs blitzes? Also, if you have a wedge dive in your playbook, it can wear out a 33 if you can run it well. I've been in the situations where it looks like you have no answers, and sometimes, you simply don't. You have to have the athletes to run the scheme before the scheme will work. Doesn't matter if it's spread, power, wing-t, or option, if your athletes are not anywhere near theirs, you have problems that are beyond X's and O's.
One more thing to think about...the one place that you can get creative on a whim, so to speak, might be special teams. Be aggressive there. Run a couple of fakes, work your kick block game, work your on-sides kick, etc. If the situation presents itself, you can throw a wrench into the game that way.

There is nothing that will show a man's true character like the 2 yard line.
We actually are going to put a fake punt in, hopefully we will have a chance to use it. This team we are playing has two DT/DEs that have already committed to D-1 schools, one of them to Tennessee. I am trying to figure out how to get an extra hat on them, I was thinking maybe veer blocking them even on a predetermined give read, it would get us basically a triple team on those guys. What do yall think, any suggestions on that?
Play action and screens can help keep the blitz off and is usually a little easier read for your qb if he can throw on the run. Counter is a nice play from the I if you are getting a fast flowing defense, but if they are getting a bunch of penetration you'll have trouble pulling. I can tell you from personal experience try to avoid adding a bunch of plays because you will just be not very good at a lot of different things. We have certainly had the years where we didn't have much on the field and tried to make up for it with 50 different plays and we just ran 50 different plays that all looked like crap. If you have any option plays that you can use the DE as a read it can take him out of the game and take care of a lot of that blitzing too. As far as the 3-5 the most success we've had is to run right at it. Good luck, I've been there.
Option vs a 3-3-5 is a tough play unless you block it right. It's a little different than working vs a 4 or 5-front. Veer is a great play to run if you are a veer team...it is not something you can install in a week, though...especially if you want to read it. Also, I don't think option is ever a great play unless you are using it as it is meant to be. If you want to run speed option, run speed option, but don't run an option meant to look like a triple if it is not a triple. You are only slowing yourself down.

We have been practicing the veer since the summer, but I'll admit we are not where we need to be with it. I'm not big on putting new plays in, I know everyone has been saying don't do that on this thread but I never once thought about installing new stuff just so you guys know. Haha. All I wanted to get in was a jailbreak screen.
