I recently began as the Head coach of both the Frosh Team & the JV team due to low numbers in the program. We are still currently participating in a 8 game Frosh schedule and a 10 game JV schedule. The week in which both Freshmen have a game and JV have a game is upon us. The frosh team plays Thursday nights and the JV play on Friday nights.
The issue I have is trying to effectively practice with both teams while still assuring both teams are prepared for their upcoming games...which by the way are different opponents.
I have a skeleton crew with myself and one other coach able to be there everyday while I have 4 more coaches just on Tuesday and maybe a third one on Wednesday and Thursday.
Has anyone done something similar and if so how did you do it or does anyone have any ideas?
I have used systems in "2-a-days" when we have light numbers of coaches where we have groups of kids come at different times. I don't know how I would do it during the school year. Frankly, especially for the freshmen, I would not worry too much about individualizing practice plans based on different opponents. Work your practice plans on learning your schemes, period. Walk the kids through formations, alignments, and the 3-4 top plays they will have to defend, but don't get too crazy with trying to separate things if you can't do it effectively. Two coaches can divide the kids effectively to teach their scheme...tough to separate the kids to teach both their own scheme and the opponents' in my opinion.

There is nothing that will show a man's true character like the 2 yard line.

What we do with our JV and Freshman program is bring the two staffs together. Offensive coaches on monday will Coach the freshman team for 1 1/2 hours and then switch with the offensive staff now with the JV team offense for 30 minutes. Tuesday it goes offensive staff with the JV offense for 1 1/2 hours with the Defensive staff working with the freshman defense for 1 1/2 hours and then switch. On wednesdays we split 1 hour offense JV and 1 Hour JV defense 1 hour. When JV staff has offense the other coaches have freshman defense. Coach Campbell
