Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
A) DE: Line up 1 yd. outside the Wing & on the LOS. Always challenge the Wing. 1. If the Wing blocks down, DE replaces him closing down the running lane inside as much as possible, ready to take on a kick out block. 2. If the Wing comes AT DE, DE attacks the Wing with inside arm and leg, keeping outside arm and leg free. 3. If Wing goes in motion, DE gets his eyes opposite back for a counter. If no motion and flow goes away, look for bootleg, counter, reverse before pursuit. 4. If the Wing releases, DE plays his pass responsibility.
B) DT: ALIGN WITH OUTSIDE SHOE TO CROTCH OF TE. (TAKE A SHORT STEP WITH OUTSIDE FOOT READING TE — STAB WITH HANDS AND EXPLODE OUT OF HIPS). C GAP RESPONSIBILITY! 1. Vs. DOWN BLOCK OF TE: Squeeze TE over to D gap. Stay square and keep inside arm free. Control C gap and locate ball. 2. Vs. TURNOUT BLOCK OF OT: TE blocks out - dip inside shoulder and attack hip of OT. maintaining proper leverage. Keep outside leg and arm free. Bend to near back. Maintain outside leverage and bend to football. 3. Vs. TRAP (OR KICKOUT — BY ANY INSIDE BLOCKER): TE blocks out and OT blocks inside — point toe to OT, locating near back (if near back goes away, locate ANY OL coming inside out). Bend inside and treat kickout by near back and OL the same. Take out his inside shoulder with your outside shoulder. Come underneath kickout.
C) LINEBACKERS: Line up head up with offensive tackles 2 ½ to 3 yards deep. React to the block of your tackle. (1) If the tackle drives out at you, charge straight into him. Control him. Attempt to drive him back. BE SURE HE DOES NOT BLOCK YOU IN. (2) If the tackle blocks aggressively to the inside, shoot the gap quickly. Be sure that you are close to the side of the power, double team block so that you will not be vulnerable to a trap. (3) If your tackle blocks to the outside as you start to fill, be conscious of the offensive linemen on either side of him. If they are pulling away from the angle of his block, do not continue to shoot the gap but move with the flow of the pulling linemen. (4) If the tackle pulls in either direction, move with him. (5) If the tackle drops back to make a pass-protection block, drop back quickly to the hook zone and play the ball.
D) DG: ALIGN WITH OUTSIDE SHOE TO CROTCH OF THE OG (may be head up if OG has no split). (TAKE A SHORT STEP WITH OUTSIDE FOOT READING OG — STAB HANDS AND EXPLODE OUT OF HIPS): A GAP RESPONSIBILITY! 1. Vs. DOWN BLOCK OF OG: Squeeze OG over to B gap. Stay square and keep inside arm free. Control A gap and look for cutback. 2. Vs. BLOCK BY CENTER: OG pulls inside - dip inside shoulder and attack Center on your angle. If his head is in front of you, widen him and work to cross face. If his head is behind you, fold behind him. 3. Vs. TRAP: OG releases outside - flash inside for trapper. Attack trapping OG — take out his inside shoulder with your outside shoulder. Come underneath OG. ************************************************************************ Also - if they are a GOOD sweep team - we crash the DE to the side motion is headed (on a R/L call by F/S) to tear up sweep. Full M/M (Cover 0) in secondary.
