Ladies and Gents - what a great board. There's so much here.
Bottom line: I will retire from USAF as a Colonel in a few years. I love football. I love young people. And, although my only coaching experience is youth soccer (my girls), I love teaching young people. Obviously, I also have a leadership background. (I'm currently in Baghdad).
My military retirement, and my wife's employment potential, make it possible for me to entertain an "entry level" kind of switch in my future, within reason (I have small kids 11, 5, and 2 right now, 14, 8, and 5 when I am ready to make the move.)
So - since football is a bit of a passion of mine, I am researching what I need to do between now and 2013 or so to get myself in a position to maybe land a decent assistant coaching job - maybe even part time - somewhere.
I played offensive line in high school but did not play in college (ROTC scholarship). Could've walked on at a couple of small schools, but chose to pursue another course - it's worked out.
What that means is - I have no experience in coaching football and no experience playing beyond a very competitive high school level - 25 years ago.
I will read on and get as much as I can from the board, but am really interested in your opinions of what I might be able to do while still on active duty to set myself up.
I really think I have a lot to offer any football program. I just need to know how to supplement what I already have, get really smart on both high school football and leading high school kids, and be prepared to take the leap in a few years.
Thanks if you're still reading. Thanks even more if you reply!
