Football goal posts are important for any game of football, they are important for the games scoring method. But did you know that 700 years ago, the sport was banned in the UK? Football goal posts were unneeded.
Football goal posts are essential for any match. Football goal posts indicate where the goal is, and is an important feature for the scoring system for the game. Kick the ball between the goal posts, and that team has scored. But according to English history, the game was banned for over a hundred years, and no one was allowed to play.
According to historians, it was King Edward III in the 1300's that issued a banning of football in cities, believing it to cause too much noise and disturbance, and too many injuries and hustling. Back then, the rules of the game were very different from today's match, if there were any at all. The punishment was a fine of up to 4 pence or imprisonment. And in 1400's King Henry IV banned the levying of money for the game.
But the game played on. The years between the 1300's and the 1600's saw the same ban being repeatedly proclaimed. It reinforces the belief that authorities were having difficulties banning the sport because of the people's love of it. Even in the 1600's it was reported the there was often great disorder in the town. Windows were broken, and people were unruly when the game was being played. A few years later King James I instructed Christians to play every Sunday after their worship, lifting the ban.
The 1500's saw the first recorded goals, using two bushes at either end of their pitch, and the first goal keepers were employed. After that, the game was encouraged in schools for the upper and professional classes. The game was supposedly to promote competitiveness and fitness among the students. It is said that these classes are responsible for the modern game today.
During the 1800's the popularity in football began to decline. People were forced to work six days a week with twelve hour days. This included the children as they were part of the labor force. This left football mainly to the upper classes in schools.
They created rules that needed to be followed in order to prevent the usual hustle, including the offside rule, and eventually matches were arranged between schools. However, each school had their own rules. To keep things fair the game was split in two halves. The first halve saw one set of rules, and the second halve saw the other set of rules.
Thus our game evolved, and along with it came the need for actual football goal posts as opposed to bushes. Times have changed through out the centuries, and now the sport is embraced by almost everyone. With the rules set in place, no longer was there a need to ban the game, and now matches are enjoyed by both professionals and friends alike. Football goal posts are essential for any match.
