I was injured my sr. year of high school so I didn't play college ball right out of high school (not sure i wanted to) so I helped out with Jr. High at my school and rehabbed. Some other things occurred in my life and long story short I ended up coaching Jr. High for two years and varsity for two years and then attended college to play. I have played two years at a very successfu DII program. I am considering playing my final year of eligibility (DII eligiblity is weird and goes by how many semesters you have attended college, I have one more eligible year) next year which is what I want to do. But ultimately I want to get a good GA job and make a career out of coaching the college game. Would being a student assistant in the final semester I am in college make me more marketable for a GA job? I feel like my high school experience helps but I'm not sure how much. Greatly appreciate ANY advice ANY of you may have.
Not sure if I am an expert, but unless you can get in coaching at a very successful high school you are more likely to make the connections you need to get a college job by being a GA rather than coaching more high school. If you are asking whether to play or coach, I would say play, you can coach for a lot of years, you only get to play for a few.
Yes that is what I'm asking, to play or coach. I only brought up that I coached high school because if I had NO coaching experience whatsoever I'd say it would be pretty easy decision to not play so I could get some sort of coaching experience in order to market myself as a GA. I just want to make the responsible decision that will put me in the best position for my future. Appreciate the response!
I would think that you could make the same connections playing as you would coaching. Also, you can GA after you play as well. I'd kill to have eligibility back.
