We have a young QB who will be a junior NEXT season. This young man has a boat-load of physical raw talent, but a limitied football knowledge. Football is not his first love when it comes to sports, but he plays hard and is still a real threat for us on game day. THis being said, our staff is struggling with making the decision as to where to play this kid down the road. He started off as our backup quarterback this year and came in mostly to run the ball and run sprint pass out of the spread shotgun formations. We later started him at QB to finish the season with mixed results. We switched to this style of offense this past season knowing that we were going to have more athletes than normal coming through our program. The problems we are having is this:
1: The kid in question here is REALLY dedicated to his other sport year round. It is hard to get him to commit to any football related things in the "off season". So we get him on opening day of football camp with no off season work. He is in tremendous physical shape, but not mentally.
2: He has great arm strength and pretty good accuracy, but his mechanics are terrible (because of the lack of working on them) and it causes him to make some bad throws.
3: He is lethal running the ball out of the spread shotgun formations. Getting him out in space and on the sprintouts really opened up our offensive attack later in the season as he got more comfortable.
4: He does not have great football sense, and struggles to remember plays. So he is limited to what he can run and control from the QB spot right now.
I guess the long of the short is, should we keep working this kid at QB in the future? We run a 2x2 shotgun spread as our base formation with a lot of Jet Sweep and plays like Iso, counter Tre, and passes that counter the Jet Sweep motion. We just want to get this kid the ball in open space and dont seem to have a another QB that can truly hurt people with the running plays and sprintouts if we move this kid to another position. We do have speed guys for the slot postions, and about 3 different guys to play the 3 back position who sits back with the QB in the shotgun. Any suggestions as to how to get this guy the ball without "dumbing" up the rest of our offense is appreciated. Hope I did not ramble too much but I wanted to give as much info as possible for those of you that will respond. Thanks.
