To many football players, practice is hard work; but all good football players realize that more games are won on the practice field during the week, than on game days.
REASONS FOR PRACTICE:
1. To increase your stamina, speed, and general coordination.
2. To learn the proper technique of executing the fundamentals.
3. To perfect your execution of these fundamentals.
4. To learn the detailed phases of football:
a. Offensive plays from scrimmage.
d. How to defense this plays from scrimmage.
e. Kicking game phases.
f. Rules of the game.
5. To perfect your execution of these team phases.
6. To develop "esprit de corps" . (Intense loyalty, devotion, and enthusiasm of a union of common interests and responsibilities
of a group). This can be included in one statement:
"TO PREPARE YOURSELVES TO BE THE VERY BEST YOU CAN BE"
GENERAL POINTS REGARDING PRACTICE:
1. There will never be enough time to accomplish everything, so don't waste any practice time.
2.Know your drills and what you want to accomplish. Plan and Evaluate.
" A great coach is one that can take a three hour practice and do it in two hours, or a two hour practice and do it in one and one-half hour".
3. Drills should simulate what you are doing during game situations.
4. Don' stay in one drill too long. Set the number of repetitions instead of going by time.
5. Set up equipment before period, so as not to take away time.
6. Recognize fatigue and be ready to adjust drills.
7. Evaluate personnel while doing a drill.
8. Setup installation of how you will teach kicking game, defensive, and offensive procedures.
9.Don't ever sit down during practice.
10. Try to always be doing something every minute, get to know your players.
PROGRESSION IN LEARNING:
1. You learn WHAT to do.
2. You are TOLD HOW to do it
3. You LEARN HOW to do it.
4. You practice until correct performance is a habit. Careless or sloppy performance ruins good habits, but careful performances build up good habits.
5. You coordinate this performance with your teammates.
6. Every drill or phase of football should have the procedure of :
a. TALK IT b. WALK IT c. JOG IT d. RUN IT
7. You should have a reason, as a coach, for everything that you are asking players to do.
8. A player needs to see "the big picture" of each phase of the game as well as his individual assignment.
9. This is our football team (players and coaches)
10. Your individual status does not depend on the coaches. It depends on you!
YOU ILL BE EVALUATED BY:
• How well can you do the required things?
• How much do you know?
• How fast are you improving?
• What is your attitude?
• How dependable are you?
