The History of Football Shoes
Overview
The history of American football begins in the late 19th century, when players at Rutgers University began to combine the sports of rugby and soccer. At the time, football was a rough-and-tumble game that resulted in a a great many injuries to players. As the game developed, so did football equipment, including special shoes to protect players and enhance performance.
Early Football Shoes
Early in the history of football, players wore leather shoes or boots not unlike their usual street or athletic shoes. Before long, players realized that steel-toed boots helped protect their feet during games and that hammering metal cleats into the bottom of their shoes helped them gain traction on wet or muddy fields. In the late 1800s,sports equipment manufacturers began selling shoes with leather cleats, especially for football.

Development of Cleats
After the original leather cleats hit the market, manufacturers in the early 20th century began working on cleats especially for football shoes. Several of today's top manufacturers of football shoes began developing and selling their wares in this period. In 1925, for example, the Dassler brothers invented football shoes that featured replaceable metal studs in the soles. The brothers went on to found the Adidas company and the Puma company, which produce football shoes.
Shoe Design
Football shoes have also changed in design since the early ankle-high boots worn by the U.S.'s first football players. Today, most football shoes are low-cut. In addition, football shoes have become lighter than the original leather shoes as synthetic materials and different types of leather have become commonplace materials. The original football shoes made in the 1800s weighed more than a pound apiece, but by 1998, Nike was producing a football shoe that weighed less than 8 oz. Today, most manufacturers also offer football shoes in custom colors to match players' uniforms or personal preferences.
Modern Football Shoes
Today, football cleats are a standard part of a football player's protective gear. The shoes protect players' feet and help them balance, and stay upright on the field. Professional football players may own several sets of football shoes, switching between them depending on the conditions on the field. For instance, players may wear longer cleats on a wet field than they would on a dry one, or may choose very short cleats for a frozen field.
