Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I would like to thank coach Campbell for his glazier clinic webinar, very much appreciated and I'm thankful to have found him.
I have a question to coach Campbell and the forum. If you're in a 3x2 passing formation, you have Cover 1 man, and the defense is playing about 5 yard cushion to your receivers, what is your rule of thumb for your QB to read.
I'm looking for tips and pointers to share with my QB, on what they should be looking for in his read progression. I want him to see where the free safety is located, I want him to make an inside out read on the DB's to Corners. I feel you can get a good read on DB on their feet placements and how they are sizing up their receiver.
Also, on a 10 yard hook/curl route, with a 5 yard cushion, do you want your receivers to work their DB's to turn their hips to the outside/sideline and then use a swat and punch technique if they can't get seperation? I felt they should always run to their inside number if the db is giving them a big cushion, because the inside man wins the battle to the ball.
A) QB Concerned with: 1. Direction (which side am I going to)? 2. Progression (of receivers on side I'm throwing)?
B) Determining Direction: 1. Trigger (W/S and/or MLB)? 2. "Stage is set" (you KNOW the coverage)? If so — eliminate trigger read & just follow progression!
QB's read & progressions CHANGE according to coverages, & patterns. 1. WR runs in-breaking route - progress INSIDE/OUT horizontally. 2. WR runs out-breaking route - progress OUTSIDE/IN horizontally. 3. WR runs deep route - progress from DEEP to SHORT vertically.
Generally speaking, (on mirrored CURLS) the progression is inside/out HORIZONTALLY on the side of the defense AWAY from the drop of the MLB (who controls the STRENGTH of the undecoverage - up to about 12 yds deep). MLB goes weak or blitzes - go to strongside of formation; MLB goes straight back or strong - go weakside of formation.
Our passing game reads for QB's are really SO SIMPLE, but I get lots of questions about them. Here they are in a NUTSHELL:
I. THROWING THE BALL TO THE OUTSIDE, OR, THROWING THE BALL DEEP:
A) MUST KNOW WHERE SINGLE COVERAGE IS.
B) MANY TIMES IT IS DEFINED BEFORE THE SNAP.
C) IF NOT DEFINED - KEY THE W/S. HE DICTATES FROM A 4 DEEP COVERAGE (2 SAFETIES DEEP) WHO IS SINGLED.
II. THROWING THE BALL INSIDE:
A) MUST KNOW WHERE MOST OF THE UNDER COVERAGE IS CONVERGING.
B) MUST DEFINE IN ALL DEFENSES WHO "MIKE" IS AND THROW AWAY FROM HIM.
C) CONTROL OTHER LBers WITH FLARE CONTROL FROM RB AND EITHER H OR Y AFTER "CHECK" BLOCK RESPONSIBILITY TELLS THEM TO RELEASE. NOTE: IF MIKE GOES STRAIGHT BACK OR CALLSIDE - YOU GO AWAY. IF MIKE BLITZES OR GOES AWAY - YOU GO CALLSIDE.
DEFINITIONS: 1. MOFO = "MIDDLE OF FIELD OPEN" 2. MOFC = "MIDDLE OF FIELD CLOSED".
QUARTERBACK READ SYSTEM:
PRE-SNAP LOOK THE DEFENSE — ANTICIPATE
READ ON THE DROP — ADJUST
THINK: PPROGRESSION/TIMING/OUTLETS
BEWARE OF THE MIDDLE OF THE FIELD LOOKS — MOFO/MOFC
KNOW THE COVERAGE ELEMENTS:
ZONE 3 DEEP MOFC/2 DEEP MOFO
MAN 3 DEEP MOFC/2 DEEP MOFO
DOG/BLITZ MOFC/MOFO
This is the BASIS of the QB READING SYSTEM for Coryell, Joe Gibbs, ETC. We use THIS offense:
POST-SNAP READS : One of the most important areas in determining secondary coverages is the middle of the field (MOF).
We normally read the MOF in our drop back passing game. Reading the "MOF" becomes necessary when it is impossible to determine what the coverage is before the snap or to make sure of secondary coverage after the snap.
In reading the "MOF" the QB simply looks down the middle of the field. He should not focus on either Safety but see them both in his peripheral vision.
A) MOFO: If neither Safety shows up in the "MOF", and both are deep, it will indicate a form of Cover 2. A quick check of Corner alignment and play will indicate whether it is a 2/Man or 2/Zone. If neither Safety shows up in the "square" and both are shallow, it will indicate a Cover 0 (blitz look).
B) MOFC: If the Strong Safety shows up in the "MOF", this will indicate a Cover 3 rolled weak or possibly a Cover 1.
C) MOFC: If the Weak Safety shows up in the "MOF", this will indicate a strong side coverage. It could be a Cover 3 or a Cover 1. If the coverage is Cover 3, it could be a Cover 3/Sky (Safety), or a Cover 3/Cloud (Corner), depending on who has the short zone.
IMPORTANT NOTE: When EITHER of the Safeties shows up in the "MOF", the best percentage area to throw the ball in is the side that he came from! If NEITHER of the Safeties show up in the "MOF" — throwing the ball into the "MOF" is a high percentage throw.

My passing game is a little different than what you describe, but I run my curls with an arrow underneath. My QB is to read the OLB to that side...if he expands (with the arrow) look the curl...if he sinks (with the curl) look the arrow.

There is nothing that will show a man's true character like the 2 yard line.
On a Curl/Flat with 2 or 3 defenders underneath (to the throwing side) - which you will ALWAYS get in Cover 3 AND Cover 2 - you NEED to have 3 receivers out callside for "COVERAGE CONTROL" (AKA: "field distribution"). If not - the OLB can hang under the curl, & break to the flat AS the flat receiver comes in front of him. THIS gives the ILB time to get under the curl by "pattern reading" the #2 (flat receiver) - which tells the ILB to drop quickly under the curl if #2 goes flat. This "coverage overlap" thru "pattern reading" can give them 2 on 2 with the undercoverage vs. Curl/Flat (& potentially a F/S robbing the curl).
Curl/Flat has been the #1 pass in our offense since 1964, & I can assure you if they play you as I described above - you WILL have a problem. This is why we put a receiver in the callside HOOK zone, callside CURL zone, & callside FLAT zone - giving us a "3 on 2" HORIZONTAL STRECH.
PS: Something ELSE you may see is the MLB goes QUICKLY to callside HOOK, the SLB goes QUICKLY to callside Curl, & the OLB goes QUICKLY to callside flat. THIS gives them a "3 on 2" advantage UNDERNEATH on Curl/Flat. In THIS case - QB has to "trigger" weak!!! We saw a TON of this!
